Good to hear it turned out ok for you in the end, hopefully if there does turn out to be a problem it won't be too long before it's fixed.
I've monitored the connection since though and not seen a significant drop again. Perhaps as there was a certain football match on between Man United and Liverpool this was causing a lot of extra traffic to go through the exchange and cause congestion.

Re: New Fibre Order Confusion with Sky's System
Well I may as well update with my trials and trepidations.
As it turns out, the peak-time issues are getting worse each night. Between around 9pm and 11:30pm pings are jumping to over 1000ms, and speeds are all over the place, lower than 5Mbps at times.
I'm posting on the official forum in the hope that the issue might be flagged sooner, but there appears to be issues at quite a few Manchester exchanges. At the moment the connection is unusable during these times for anything other than (quite slow) browsing.

Ok, you can stop monitoring now.
There are some issues with a couple of exchanges in Manchester that have been identified. Sky has scheduled some work to fix this. It'll be 5-8 weeks before it is completed. Of course this is subject to change if there is an unforeseen issue.
