Fibre being installed in 2 weeks!

      Hi all,

Just bought my first property and I have signed up with Sky, they beat BT completely at price.

Unfortunately because the previous owners took the number they have quoted 2 weeks until Phone/Fibre activation.

My question is this, the new place doesn't have a phone line in the room I want the computer. I won't have the money for new homeplugs, will the Open Reach engineer run an extension for me under the carpet if I request it when he arrives? Do I need to give an advanced warning for this?

Any information would be grateful. Always found these forums very useful!

I don't believe they are allowed to run the wire under the carpet, but tack it to the top of the skirting board - others who know more can tell me if this is wrong.

You can, as part of a fibre install, have your master socket moved to a better location if that suits.

You shouldn't need to make any additional requests as part of the order. I was told by Sky that they add in the 'data extension' option by default when placing the order with openreach.

      Thanks for the quick response.

My master socket is in my main hallway and there is no room for a table for the router to sit on. The room I would like it setup in is across the other side so it would need to go under the carpet. Its a 1st Floor Flat so I am not sure what the options will be. Could anyone confirm if they run anything under the carpet?

They don't run cable under floor coverings. I've got a short run under a sunken door threshold strip. He left it on top, I had to do that bit myself after he'd gone. Could you ask the OR engineer to tack the cable loosely around the room and then put it under the carpet afterwards?

Re: Fibre being installed in 2 weeks!

Just a couple of points which may be relevant:

The link between BTO Modem and the router can be any suitable length of Ethernet Cat 5 (prefer Cat 5e) cable, up to a distance of 100m.

Provided that you have a power socket near to the master socket, you could have the BTO Modem placed there and the router can be in the room where you want it to be.

As for the phone it self, DECT phones only need the one connection. Alternatively a normal telephone extension will be fine.
