I said that Sky quote a estimate speed 40% less then what the line is CAPABLE off, that means if your line is capable of 100MB they will quote you 60MB or if your line is capable of 70MB then 28MB and so on regardless if their current package has a maximum connection of 80MB.

I am talking about the what the phone line is capable off not your current package, the fact that your getting nearer to the maximum means when they upgrade your cabinet you will get a bump up in speed!
I think the original question of "where are you basing this on" still stands. I live about 500m from the cabinet, so the original line estimate was for 50/11. I'm on the 40/10 product and connecting at this. BTO have 'revised' the estimates and these are now 36/6, but am still connecting at 40/10.

Basing it on the test from the BT engineer who tested my lines maximum speed to the cabinet. If and when they upgrade my cabinet to a faster speed I will still be limited to the maximum speed my line can take.

It is approx 40% lower then what I am getting as an estimate.

This is ridiculous! You should pay by the MB, the higher speed you want the more you pay!
This has been mooted before, but as has been pointed out the speed you get does not have a direct relation to what it costs. A long line with a low speed can actually cost more to run than a short line with a high speed.

It is approx 40% lower then what I am getting as an estimate.
If it is 40% below the estimate Sky gave you, then you should be complaining and cancelling your contract.

apologise, its 40% less then what my line can handle as confirmed by the BT engineer.
I am on unlimited pro so either the BT guy doesn't know what he's talking about or SKY is purposely reducing my speed to overcome capacity issues.

just checked on line with BT, they have reduced the estimate on my line by 10MB which is now less then the 40MB speed given for the unlimited package.

Re: Sky Fibre Pro - a tale of two speeds..(or when is 80mb not 80mb)

The thing is that these estimates have to take into account unknown wiring issues (i.e copper coated alluminium, thin wires, poor wiring to the master socket, extended lead to modem).

Another important issue is "cross-talk". As the fibre cabinet fills up with other fibre customers, the high frequencies used interfere with one another. This reduces the potential connection speeds for everyone.

So I understand what your argument is, but I am also trying to suggest that it is a safe estimate based upon knowledge of what can happen.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

I had the same ' throughput' issue after months of getting nowhere and paying sky 30 a month, but to be fair sky did keep me updated they just couldn't fix it! I eventually went back to the 40mb service which has worked fine.
