I'm just about to go live with BT Unlimited Infinity 2 from Sky Fibre - 80/20 vs 40/10 and about 27 cheaper over the 18months.

I will be sad to leave Sky Fibre but I'm looking forward to not being forced to use an inferior router & I've given up waiting for any price reduction. I suspect if I stayed a few more months I'd have given up on the supposed future of being able to use my own router with Sky as well!

In my case it's once bitten, twice shy. Nothing would make me go to BT but as long as my home-built router works with Sky I'm not bothered.

Most people won't be bothered about dual band wireless as long as they can browse ebay facebook.etc and the kids Xbox works that's probably 99% of their net usage covered.

There will be the vast majority of Skys customers who don't even know the router has an admin interface who probably just about manage to put the wireless key into their laptop and get it connected they'll probably notice that the FTTC is faster than their old DSL but aren't likely to relise they're not getting their full speeds.

Sky sell unlimited because it attracts people who don't want to worry about additional usage charges, most of their customers probably don't use that much data which is why they can get away with selling it so cheap. It's the people who only use the service to browse ebay.etc that's subsidizing the heavy users bandwidth costs

Sky is about cheap mass market broadband Not about the latest technologies.
Whilst I agree, you would then expect the other big ISPs to be doing the same, however BT and VM have already released routers that are far superior to the Sky Hub. Sky might have a better argument if/when they allow customers to use their own routers, but currently they 'force' a use of their own router. A lot of homes now have more demand for bandwidth/speed, not only from the internet but streaming from NAS/iPad/media centres and the like. Whilst this is a smaller proportion of users compared to the 'plug in and surf' segment, the proportion will be growing as becomes the norm.

When They start losing customers to competitors in any significant numbers due to their poor router selection then Sky will start to care, but until then I doubt they're overly worried

Don't know much about it as it's all very hush hush but Sky are already beta testing a replacement for the SR101.
