    BT Home Hub 5

This is a discussion on BT Home Hub 5 within the Sky Broadband (Fibre) Help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; Yes I noticed a few people mention that in other threads. Might as well go to the organ grinder eh? ...

I think the only thing the HH5 doesn't offer that I would like is a Guest Network feature.

I agree. The specs of the new home hub 5 put it in to the category of "I'd buy that", whereas the Sky hub is more in the "Well, it is free" category.

Let's hope the new Sky Hub is on a par with the Home Hub 5 or virgin hub. If it isn't, then IMHO it wouldn't be worth releasing it.

What would be doubly insulting if that's it's inferior and Sky still insist you use it (or at least make it very hard to do otherwise).

I think Sky should bite the bullet and go back to Netgear and ask them to produce a Sky branded router which can compete with BT and Virgin. The only time Sky have been ahead of the pack was when they issued the DG834GT which was, in fact still is, a great router provided it is not crippled by the Sky firmware. I think any of the big manufacturers would jump at the chance of getting millions of guaranteed sales.

Something based upon the D6300 would be a hugely popular router.

It would really need a built in vDSL modem too.

Perhaps. I guess that this is a debatable option.

Two devices will use a little more electric, but it would also mean that the connection retains the connection speed. Whenever the BTO Modem is currently reset, the speeds appear to drop dramatically for around 10 days at present.

There is also the advantage that the Modem and router can be several meters apart. This allows people to place the router in a better location for the WiFi signal in some cases.

I am not on the Beta test for the 2nd Generation Sky Hub, but I recently read a comment on another site, in which a Beta tester stated that the new Sky hub has a built in VDSL router & is Black, but that otherwise, is identical in specification to the existing SR101 hub.

Difficult to answer that really as I don't have one.

However since all of Sky's Beta tests are subject to an NDA either the person has broken the NDA or is lying about the specifications.

Either way they have either lied to Sky about keeping things quiet or lied to everyone else.

Agreed - it looks like they are breaking the NDA.

I've just tried to find (via a Google search), the comment which I read on DS a few days ago. I did not find the comment I had previously read, but found another comment/thread, which also stated that the new hub was identical (other than being black & having built in vDSL), however, this also included a link to a photo of the new hub alongside the current hub!

Whilst I would prefer a black hub (would look much better under my TV & would match my Sky box), I'm not sure I will be able to justify paying for a new hub which is pretty much the same in terms of spec as the existing hub. Saying that, loosing the Openreach modem sounds appealing, as I hate clutter & like to minimise cables. Hopefully the new hub will not be too pricey for existing customers & I will be able to justify the cost of buying the new hub.
