      Fibre Speed Test Results

Having recently upgraded to Fibre I was interested to see how my connection performed.
Looking at other peoples signatures, Scubbie, Shonk & Andrewjr in particular appear to get results that equate to around 94% of download and 90% of upload.
With my router reporting 39996dl and 9996up I am struggling to get over 30 and 8 respectively, which equates to 75%/80%.
This is using the speedtest.net London Namesco server which appears to be what others use, using servers nearer to me give worse results.
I know you cant expect everything but I was expecting more, the pings are also disappointing as they are 2-3 times more.
      Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Re: Fibre Speed Test Results

I found that my results were highly influenced by the computer that I used.

My new Laptop has an i7 processor and gives perhaps the better results over Ethernet.

Also, on advice from Sky, it is best to use on of two particular servers on the speedtest.net site in London. These have the bandwidth to support the testing better.

Perhaps your line is operating on an interleaved profile, which would explain not only the higher latency but possibly the reduced speeds as the error correction would presumably introduce additional overheads

      Re: Fibre Speed Test Results

Latency is either a long line or a modem/dslam mismatch

All of my machines are capable of around 75meg down 18meg up

      PC1 Core2 Quad 3.2ghz Realtek Gigabit
      PC2 Core2 Quad 3.0ghz Realtek Gigabit
      Pc3 Core2 Duo 3.33ghz Atheros Gigabit
      Pc4 I7 2820qm Realtek Gigabit
PC5 Core Duo 2166mhz Realtek Gigabit
      PC6 Atom 1666mhz Realtek 10/100
I havnt tested my other machines but presume they are fine

The only one that had problems was the Atheros Nic device it was pulling 75mbit downstream 10mbit upstream
on the latest atheros drivers a roll back to the windows whql drivers resulted in 18mbit upstream

I used the Namesco, trying the other gives near identical results.

How would I determine if it is an interleaved profile and if so can this be changed ?

I have the Huawei HG612 modem, no idea what the dslam is.

I do live "oop north", however a test to a local server gives a worse ping.

A "local" server probably isn't all that local unless it's also on Sky, the traffic will be going to a POP to hand-off to the other network if both Sky and the other provider are on one of the Manchester IX's then it might be done there, otherwise it's probably going to London and back.

That makes sense, hadn't thought about it like that.
Any comments on the other quote ?

Interleaved is controlled by DLM on FTTC, I think sky can possibly ask for a more aggressive profile but I'm not sure if they will or not.

I have heard of cases where having a mismatched modem to DSLAM can cause interleaving to be applied, certainly I know of at least one person who got better performance when they switched their Huawei modem for an ECI one since they had an ECI DSLAM in the cabnet.

I should point out BT won't change the modem, This person had to procure one elsewhere.
