      DHCP request every 30 mins

      Hi

I've just noticed on my router log that it is requesting an IP address every 30 mins instead of waiting till the lease is up (60 mins). Is this normal and if not, how do I change it (I can't find a setting for it)

      Cheers

      Colin.

      This is normal.

Essentially the router is renewing it's presence on the Sky Servers and saying "I am here".

If the router were to fail to renew the 'lease' then you would be provided a new IP Address next time.

And there's no setting that you can change to modify or control this.

Thanks for the replies. I knew the renewal process was ok (i'm a computer engineer and know about DHCP function) I just thought every 30 mins was a bit excessive. I was expecting 45 to 50 since the lease time is 60 mins. Oh well, if it can't be changed then I'll just have to accept it.

      Again, thanks for the replies.

      Cheers

The DHCP client starts requesting a renewal by default after half the lease time has expired as specified in RFC 2131. It is possible for Sky to configure their DHCP servers to change this but there's no need to really.

Re: DHCP request every 30 mins

One of the nuisances with this system becomes apparent when you change the Sky router for another Sky router. You need to wait for around an hour before the 2nd router can log into the Sky servers on your line.

Whilst most people don't tend to swap routers over much, it is a pain when it is required.

Re: DHCP request every 30 mins

I wonder why this does not happen on ADSL? I thought it may be happening and was not recorded on the Log, but as I have no problem swapping over routers, I doubt if that is the case.
