      Fibre Speeds

So my exchange got enabled at the beginning of April, sent an email to enquiries about my cab, so just have to continue playing the waiting game.

But just wondering If i'll get the full fat 40/10 speed, currently sync at 7mb with a attenuation of 48, quite a distance.

      Re: Fibre Speeds

Have you looked at the BTO Where & When page?

Openreach - Superfast fibre broadband - Where and when

Punch in your postcode and sometimes it will give you a clearer indication.

As for the speed, I found that by checking the BT Infinity site I got an idea long before I could with Sky. I could only get an estimate from Sky once my cabinet went live.

Superfast Broadband – Get Fibre Optic Broadband with BT Infinity

When using the BT site select the option "I don't have a phone line" as it normally does not like Sky's telephone numbers.

As for using your ADSL speed to estimate what you can get, forget it. ADSL is piped from the exchange and decreases the further that you are from the exchange. FTTC reduces much more quickly in distance, but starts at the cabinet at full speed (i.e. potentially 80/20).

      Re: Fibre Speeds

Oh trust me, i've been checking the Infinity site everyday when my exchange was on "Accepting Orders".

So from Cab to my house is when it starts to decrease in speed?

Yep. Basically if you are close to the cabinet then you should be able to get up to 80/20 connection speeds. The further that you are from the cabinet, the more the potential speed will drop.

If you sign up to SFU then even if you are able to touch the cabinet by leaning out of your lounge window, then the speed will be capped at 40/10.

However for those out there who are a long way from the cabinet, speeds of 15/2 and worse have been seen.

Another thing which will affect the speed is how many people are connected to your Fibre cabinet. Luckily for me I got in early. My estimated speed from BTO was 62.7mb and Sky gave me 64.2mb. Both gave me 20mb upload in the estimates. Currently I still have 80/20.

      Note: 80/20 refers to 80mb download & 20mb upload.

      Re: Fibre Speeds

Ahhh right, thats good to know.

I've just discovered i'm on Cab 18, my phoneline travels along telephone poles, so by following the lines, my cab is roughly 0.3miles away from my house......if it works that way.
