      Extremely slow upload speeds

Hi my brother in law recently had sky. 40mb fibre installed (his 1st 10 days are up today)

After his install everything seemed to be working fine DL speed of 37 - 39mb and upload speeds of 7 - 9mb but after approx 5 days his upload speed dropped dramatically to 1.5mb (DL still 37- 39mb). As his initial 10 days are now up he has rung sky today to be told there is nothing wrong with his line it must be his PC, does anybody here have any idea what that might be?

I have done the speedtest on multiple sites and also with all his security software turned off and the upload is still 1.5mb at best.

I have also done the speedtest via wifi on both his Samsung galaxy S3 and my S2 using the speednet app and it shows upload speed of 9mb which does seem to suggest his pc is the problem. (his pc is hardwired)

Any help or advice very much appreciatted.

The suddenness of the change nust give some clue I would have thought. The usual detection work starts with what was being done on the computer in an approx. 24hr timespan - any new programme installed, alteration to computer configuration?

Possibilities that come to mind are something hogging or blocking the port - even some new banking anti-virus software. Has the router been powered down and reset? Is there a separate firewall installed?

If you have e.g a gigabit switch installed then I have read of these partially dying and causing a loss of upload speed. Or it could conceivably be a problem with the MB network section or driver.

If you can pinpoint what you changed or were doing just prior to the drop in speed that would be helpful

      Cheers

Meteosat thanks you very much your answer really got my thinking so I looked to see if his driver was up to date for his network adapter and found his adapter is a Nvidia Nforce (which I previously I didnt know) so into the nvidia setting I went and found he had it set to LAN 1.5, I then set this myself to 40000k and run a speedtest and bang straight up to 9MB upload speeds.

Thank you very much for the prompt.

Delighted! I did wonder if the network chip might have become faulty, but sounds like s/w rather.

Just disable it's throttling completely if you can.

Do you know which varient of the Nforce it is?

The NF3/4 had something called nvidia hardware firewall on the chip and to say it was crap would be putting it politely, it was so bad i think the newer drivers disabled it and stopped supporting it as it would randomly just block things and drop packets. Dispite being configured otherwise
