Mine both defaulted to SD and have done so for some time now (well at least the older one has).

I manually selected the HD options though.

overloaded, Is not just YouTube gets cached, BBC iPlayer/ITV Player they all get cached and because YouTube is watched 1 million times in the UK...Well ill let you think about that one, However there is a way of caching stuff yourself (thats if you have a big hard drive) but Linux is best for this but can be run in Windows/Mac and a linux distro called pfsense and look for a package named "Squid3"

Running a Squid Proxy Under Windows - AusGamers.com - Windows
      SquidMan - Mac
      Linux ubuntu = sudo apt-get install squid3
pfsense OS (spare PC with 2 Nic cards and a 1Gbps switch)

Can't really see the benefit of running a Squid proxy cache for the average home network unless you expect multiple users to hit the same content.

Of course it might be worth while if you want to use webfiltering or virus scanning at the gateway.

I had this problem and following these small steps fixed the issue for me. Streaming is pretty much instant again now, even at 1080p

Now if only there was a way to do this directly on my router, it would certainly speed up YouTube on my Samsung Smart TV

You'd need a router outbound firewalling.

There are a number of plugins for both firefox and chrome that automatically select the highest bitrate for you. I use 'Youtube high definition' for firefox.
