      can someone clarify speeds....pls

Ive ordered sky fibre and before i did i checked to see what speeds i could get.
SKY,BT and Plusnet all say 20mb dl and 5mb ul

At the moment i get between 8-10 mb dl and 1.3mb ul on my o2 adsl.
The cabinet is about 50 metres away down the bottom of the street or theres another one about 250 metres away round he corner,i was under the impression that i should be able to get alot better speeds with the box being so close.
ive read a few threads with people saying they got between 3 and 5 mb on adsl but on fibre they are up in the 30's.......
im confused,i tried to google it to try find some info but its not very helpful.
can anyone explain how speeds are worked out or point me to some decent info....

      thanks

Some info here including expectations of speed at various distances from cabinet:
thinkbroadband :: Fibre Broadband (FTTC / FTTH) Guide

You need to know which cabinet you are connected to though in order to know approximately how far from home to cabinet.

If you input your postcode at this site: FTTC Check hopefully it will tell you the cabinet number that you are connected to.

      cheers for that.
seems that my cabinet is over a KM away...................even though there is about 6 within 500 metres.
i have a fairly new install, about 2 years ago but why would they put me on a box so far away???????

Are you in a Virgin Media cabled area? If so it maybe that the nearby cabinets are VM and not BT.
