      Slower than Expected speeds

      Hi,

Due to being the furthest home from my local exchange and being a sky unlimited customer but only with a speed estimate of between 2-5 Mb but never getting above 2Mb in reality. as a result the wi-fi connection to the multi-room took around 30 minutes before playing.

I have decided to upgrade to Sky Fibre Unlimited, the line tests showed I could get 40Mb down and 10 Mb up.

      Today it has been installed and here are the results;

A lot faster than I had and the TV upstairs now works as it should, but its a lot lower than I expexted.

The BT Openreach engineer was a little flippant and said its 40mb at the socket and couldn't be bothered any further.

I have tried it on serval devices with several diferent speed checkers.

My question is will it get better or is this the best I will get?

      Thanks in advance

      Paul

      Re: Slower than Expected speeds

When you did your speed tests were you using a wired or wireless connected device ? Wireless devices will be slower than wired and will degrade due to signal strength, interference and other factors.

Have you checked the Sky Hub and what speed it reports you're connected at ?

      Re: Slower than Expected speeds

      Neil,

it was wireless and about 2 feet from the hub.

I have tried the ethernet cable into the hub and it does go up to 37mb, but cant sit with the wire connected all the time.

The main reason I upgraded was due to the mutiroom which is wifi took ages to download, but it works now so happy with that.

      Thank

      Paul

Try changing the wireless channel on your router from Auto to a named channel. You can do this by trial and error or you can download Inssider, link below, to find the clearest channel in your area. Channel 13 is often fairly clear. Wireless is always slower than ethernet so you will not get the same speed, but you may get it a bit closer.

Channel 1, 6, or 11 should be best.

      1. Login to the Sky Hub: point your browser at 192.168.0.1 (which is the IP address for your Sky Hub) and then type in the username and password (unless you've changed it, the username is admin and the password is sky)
      2. See the ribbon along the top of the page that says "Wireless Security Maintenance Advanced Support Licensing Information Logout"? Click on "Wireless".
      3. Scroll down to where it says "Wireless Settings" and look for where it says "Channel".
      4. Next to "Channel" there's a drop-down list (it may say "Auto") - so click on it and choose the channel number you want to try.
      5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the button named "Apply".
      6. Done!

It's outrageous that vm advertises that, then many (or is it all?) customers discover those speeds are only available while you're asleep.
