Sky Fibre Hub - What is it?

      Hi,

Last weekend I signed up to upgrade my Sky Broadband Unlimited to Sky Fibre.

In particular I asked whether the new Sky Hub WiFi Router would be included - I asked and clarified this three times to make sure the salesperson knew exactly what I was talking about.

No problem, they confirmed that they were despatching it immediately. Not arrived yet - it has plenty of time yet but it did get me thinking, are they really going to send me one.

Two reasons I wanted one - firstly I want the latest kit, but most importantly my wireless performance has never been very good with any of the previous Sky routers and I'm hoping that this one will be an improvement - didn't want to pay 40 for it though so thought I'd ask for it as a freebie as part of my upgrade.

Now when I look at my order online it includes

      Sky Fibre Unlimited
      Sky Fibre Hub
      BT OpenReach Engineer Appointment

      All sounds fine but

The Hub I'm talking about itsn't specific to fibre - new standard broadband customers get it - so why is it called the Sky Fibre Hub
I know that BT have to fit a Fibre modem between the faceplate and the router - is this what they mean by Sky Fibre Hub (shouldn't be because it isn't a hub)
I did some googling and saw a post saying that the BT engineer couldn't do the job because his Sky Fibre Hub hadn't arrived. Now if the hub is the new router as I beleive then the BT engineer doesn't need it to complete his job. But if it is the Fibre Modem then he does.

Can anyone here put me out of my misery

Is the Sky Fibre Hub the new Wi-Fi Router?

      Cheers,

      Nigel

Re: Sky Fibre Hub - What is it?

There are details of spec, pics and lots of articles about Sky Hub SR101 here:

      Sky Hub SR101

As far as I know, Sky Hub is standard issue now. The firmware can handle both ADSL and Fibre, so no need for two different versions of the hardware.

OR engineer will bring the (fibre) modem. You then connect the Sky Hub to the (fibre) modem with an ethernet cable (which is supplied in the box).

There's no reason why the OR engineer should have to abort the job if the Sky Hub hasn't arrived - it just means you won't be able to get online until it does, but that would be very annoying!

Thanks for the quick reply. Thought it must be this but it threw me calling it a Sky Fibre Hub when it isn't really related to fibre at all.

      Cheers,

      Nigel

I can assure you there's nothing special about the so called sky hub compared to the old router I like you wanted the latest kit and why not I have had sky fibre from day one 7 months now and never had as much trouble as I have had with the new hub especially with wireless side of things on iPads and iPhones but hey Maybe yours will be ok , because sky certainly won't be able to sort your problems out

I don't think I've previously heard of it being called the Sky Fibre Hub before.

My experience has been the opposite.

When I got Sky Fibre (April 2012), I had terrible problems with the Sagemcom router's wireless connection to my iPhone - see the thread:
      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/mac-u...tml#post379171

Then, in July 2012, I got a Sky Hub and the wireless problem was solved.

I suppose everyone's experience will be different!

I heard somewhere that the new sky hub goes to sleep to save power after a while when not in use , like over night perhaps its not waking up when something wireless tries to connect to it ?? all I know is I didn't have these problems before the sky fibre team seem pretty clue less to be honest

Re: Sky Fibre Hub - What is it?

There is a power saving mode, but only if it isn't being used.

The moment that there is some activity, it will continue to work as if it hadn't done anything.

Also the OP has a WiFi g router. This is a WiFi N router. Hopefully they will notice a significant improvement on the WiFi side.

OP stands for original poster. Sky will send out the latest router if you upgrade to fibre.
