Will an adsl modem router work with sky fibre?

      Hi Guys

Will an adsl modem router work with Sky fibre?

Or does it have to be an cable router?

Recently I have also seen BTinfinity/Cable fibre routers? how are these different?

      Thanks for any help.

It should work as Sky's Hub is an ADSL modem router. It is just that you will lose one of the ethernet ports as this will be used to connect to the fibre modem. A cable router has an extra ethernet port instead of the ADSL port, designated the WAN port, for connecting to a cable or fibre modem.

Re: Will an adsl modem router work with sky fibre?

This used to be a simple answer, but along with a few other manufacturers, Sky has muddied the waters.

      Essentially the answer is no.

In the case of the Sagem 2504N there are two version of firmware. On is for connection to an ADSL connection only, where the ADSL port & modem are used. The other version is actually designed for use with the BTO Modem on Fibre connections. This allows you to use the ADSL port on an ADSL connection and one of the Ethernet ports for when you have Sky Fibre installed.

The Sky Hub SR101 only comes with one firmware type. This allows the router to be used just like the 2nd variant for the Sagem 2504N.

Most ADSL Modems do not have firmware which will work like this.

As for using the BT HomeHub v3, unless you can get a customised firmware, it will not work.

Sky uses a specific method for their own routers to verify the authenticity of the connection. Whilst members of this forum have published details on how you can get this information for use with your own non-Sky router, you will also need a custom firm installed on the Cable router, with the exception of the Billion 7800n. Again instructions for all of this are on the forum.

I suspect the custom firmware might enable the v6 (ADSL) 2504N to connect to FTTC providing the username/password will work.

Perhaps I'm missing something. There have been a number of postings on this forum about using a second ADSL modem with DHCP disabled and the ADSL port disconnected so that basically it is acting as a switch and wi-fi access point. A fibre modem could connect directly to a PC without a router so it should work with an intermediate switch or something (ie. a router) acting as one.

Re: Will an adsl modem router work with sky fibre?

Thinks of that as 'piggybacking' the 2nd router onto a primary router.

The BTO Modem does not operate in the same way as a router so cannot be piggybacked on to.

The BTO modem just acts as a bridge between the line and the router. With the unlocked firmware on the Huawei modem it can be set up as a router but it won't work with Sky.

Hmm might see if I can get my hands on another one

Would rather get a 2nd one to play with than unlock my Openreach provided one so if I run into a line issue I've got an un modified one to put on before calling support.

Someone had one working on sky's adsl using "mer" which suggests its possible to pass the required string to its dhcp client

Therefore if one knows the ptm values and vlan tag I expect there's a good chance it could be persuaded to connect
