      Speed query

I was in the process of signing up for fibre, and was hoping for the 80 - 20 speeds. When signing up they give you estimated speeds, they stated my line should give 40 -40, this is somewhat confusing as I thought the maximum up speed was only 20 mbps, and I was hoping for a greater download speed as the cabinet is only about 25m from my house, but would be more than happy with it if I could get 40 up. I have delayed signing up until I can find out a little more. Anyone got any ideas about the predicted 40 - 40 speed?

      Re: Speed query

Sky don't show the upstream estimate for some reason.

The 40 - 40 is the estimate for the download speed on the 40Mbit/s package, They expect it to be between 40Mbit/s and 40Mbit/s (as 40Mbit/s is the cap on that package), it's a range as on longer lines it would show something like 25 - 35Mbit/s

It's not a great way of displaying it.

Might be worth phoning sky and telling them you are interested in fibre pro and seeing if they can give you a revised estimate.

If they are estimating 40-40 you will probably get pretty near the maximum 80Mb Pro speed, but check first to be sure. If you are within a couple of hundred metres from the fibre cabinet, you will get a top speed.

Unless the op has wet-string (or Aluminium) for the line.

I'm not sure what to do now. I've been looking around and Plusnet are now offering an unlimited service with no traffic management, with the top speed the line will allow. This is only a penny a month cheaper than Sky, but they do offer the option of paying one years line rental up front which would give me saving of 44.50 against Sky, which looks pretty tempting.

Yes price wise it's tempting - Plusnet Fibre Unlimited is 80/20 for 19.99 (assuming you are in the cheaper market area), Sky Fibre Pro 80/20 is 30 (so actually 10.01 a month cheaper than Sky and that's before considering any phone cost differences). See the thread somewhere on here about Plusnet Unlimited and also on thinkbroadband before deciding...

Can't you still pay for sky line rental up front though?

Some forum members managed this a month or two ago, bringing the price down from 14.50 per month, to the equivalent of 9.95 per month.

I did about a month or so ago, With everyone else offering it It would be silly of Sky to withdraw it.

I just phoned up the normal customer service number and had no trouble getting them to do it, just pressed one of the options to talk about my account and asked them if it was possible to pay my line rental a year up front and get the discounted rate.

      Re: Speed query

Did you specifically ask for "FIBRE PRO" ?

I remember when i ordered mine that I had to ask it directly, they were not pushing it forwhatever reason.

When i asked for it they said "ok" and gave me an estimated speed of 72Mb.

I too am 25 ms from my cab, and if youve seen the other thread i beleive im getting the full 80/20 sync - based on throughput 9.6MB/s (77Mbps) when downloading large files and 2.4MB/s (19Mbps) up.
Its been like this since first sync at 8pm weds.

      WELL IMPRESSED !!

Not sure how Plusnets network is VS Skys, but with Sky you get top notch support and guranteed investment un their infrastructure and in my experience stable guranteed speeds.

Ring em up, mention the Plusnet deal see what they say.
