Just got Fiber, - Why such a messy setup?

      Hello,

I have just got fiber installed and im fairly happy with it so far, I think I will likely replace the router with the DD-WRT router ive seen here on the forums.

I was wandering, why do we have a separate modem and router? Surely there is a VDSL signal coming to my house which could be decoded by a vdsl router?
It just seams such a messy setup.

The Sagem fast router that was supplied, does that have a modem inside it too but unused? Adsl?

      Cheers

I would imagine it is a requirement of BT

They can probably remote dial into the Modem / Ports and set speeds etc and rule out any external issues from whatever ISP is plugging into their Modem, thus reducing call outs etc - ie Not our fault guv'nor, you go out.

Don't forget that prior to having fibre installed BT's responsibility ended at the master socket; everything else was your responsibility. With fibre, BT's responsibility is extended to include the fibre modem. Integrated devices may be available but BT would then either be responsible for all of it or you would be responsbile for half and BT responsible for half - that wouldn't be attractive for either party.
