Pings are all over the place

All of the speedtest.net images that people are putting on their sig seem to have quite low pings.
Mine are and always have been all over the place. Average ping is 40 - 60+ but saw 150+ on speedtesting sites. Pinging via network until (OSX) gives about 45 to google.co.uk and 38 to bbc.co.uk
im on the 40/2 package, never had full speed, always about 10mb lower, router/modem are syncing at 40000/2000.
Running direct into the router via ethernet.

Is there anything i can do to improve my ping or are those pings ok?

I think the maximum ping time's your looking at should be no more than 24ms.
I would say if your setup is ok, their may be a fault in your line.
Mine went from 16ms to 24ms but it hasn't effected my performance.
I only do ping tests using command prompt.
Speed test sites are only a guide really.
If it continues, it might be worth giving sky a ring.

Mine seem fairly constant other than a slight spike earlier that could have been usage related
