Upgrade to fibre, no, yes, I mean no!

Great site, looking for some advice, I'm currently on Sky's ADSL Unlimited product, I get 1536 kbps down and 605 kbps up, it's ridiculous to say that the Curiosity Rover that's currently on Mars has a 5MB connection back to Earth (50MB on a good day).

I've been checking for the past few months if an upgrade to fibre is available, checking the website, phoning customer services, checking SamKnows, etc... I called customer service this morning and they said no upgrade was available, 2 hours ago I received an email with the subject 'Good news - fibre is now available in your area', so as you do I was straight on the phone to order the upgrade and they are still telling me I can't get it, are there any other doors I can try? I would switch to a cabled product but it's not available in my area either!

Perhaps an overnight update will mean that Sky's systems will allow you to order it tomorrow or Monday morning.

      PlusNet Fibre since Jan 2021
Previously Sky Fibre & Sky BB since 2010.

What does the BT checker say is available?

      BT Broadband

It's best to check what wholesale products are available before checking if Sky or other providers are available.

FTTC could be available before Sky are ready to offer it at your exchange.

If you have a sky line the checker might not work, but use the address search (not the post code one) and it should be just as accurate.

Also if you post your postcode people can check for you

Re: Upgrade to fibre, no, yes, I mean no!

thanks for your replies, I understand the process I'm just really frustrated with the speeds I'm getting at the moment and noone seems to be able to tell me how long I'll have to wait to get upgraded, don't these companies speak to each other? I even tried BT to see if they could explain it...

Sherry: Welcome to BT, the most complete broadband provider. My name is Sherry.
Sherry: May I please have your Telephone Number, Postal Code and Door Number / Name to check availability?
Darren: Hi Sherry, I'm looking to upgrade my ADSL to the infinity product, could you tell me if I can get it? My phone no is 014226***0 (provided by Sky), address ** HX*****
Darren: The checker states I can't get it but I'm connected to a fibre enabled exchange and looking on the Openreach website it states that they are accepting orders for that exchange
      Sherry: Hi Darren
Sherry: Let me check that for you
      Sherry: One moment please.
      Darren: ok, thanks
Sherry: The system is taking a longer while
Sherry: The speed that your line can support is Between 1.0Mb and 3.5Mb
      Sherry: (Estimated speed: 2.0Mb)
      Sherry: .
Sherry: Infinity is yet not available to the above address
Sherry: Let me explain that to you Darren
      Sherry: One moment please.
Sherry: Within an exchange area there will be some customers who can't get BT Infinity. There are several reasons why this could be the case:
Your phone line may be connected directly to the telephone exchange and not to a local street cabinet.
Your line may be too far from the local street cabinet to have a stable BT Infinity service.
Your local street cabinet may not be suitable for fibre optic cables.
We haven't yet got the council's planning permission to do the necessary work at your local street cabinet.
The fibre service hasn't reached your area yet.
Your home may not be suitable for fibre optic cables.
Your landlord may not have agreed to the fibre infrastructure being provided in your building (for example if you live in a flat).
So, even though you may be within an enabled exchange area, it's possible that your particular line may not be able to have BT Infinity yet.
Unfortunately there isn't a date listed when you can expect it, so I cannot check when it will be available, but there should be updates coming soon.
Darren: ok, thanks for trying to explain that, now, another question, across the road at number 17 (directly facing my house) they can get fibre from Plusnet, and their telephone line comes off their house and onto the same pole as mine does, so why can't I get it?
Sherry: I am afraid that we do not have that info Darren
      Sherry: Sorry about that
      Darren: oh dear..
      Darren: thanks
      Darren: bye
      Sherry: You're welcome.
Sherry: Thank you for chatting with me today, BT Values your feedback. Please click the "End Chat" button at top right to close the chat.
