Ping - can Sky alter it?

      Hi All,

Apologies, but can't see if this has been covered on the forum.

I had Sky Fibre installed early June and have recently been upgraded to the 40/10 service
which shows 37 to 38Mbps D/S and 8 to 9Mbps U/S using the JD Auto program, with a decent
Ping result of 14 to 17ms

My problems seem to be when using my PS3 to play MW3. Although I occasionally get
into games with 50ms, more often than not is seem to be in games with 75ms.

But... there's an horrific amount of lag regardless which Ping rating i get into. The MW3 status
bar shows that i have 4 full green bars, so it would seem that my connection is fine.
FYI, the PS3 is running wireless with 100% signal strength.

When I was on ADSL (3.5Mbps D/S and 0.740 Mbps U/S) I hardly ever had these issues.
It's been more pronounced since the switch over to Fibre.

Is there anything that Sky can / could do to decrease my Ping for gaming?

      Thanks in advance.

      Ste

Chances are it's a WiFi issue - try using Ethernet and see if it still spikes

Hi Ste. It's best to hard wire your ps3 if possible. It really does make a difference when playing games like MW3.
The bad news is that I found out when I had my fibre installed is our pings and upload speed are now to good. MW3 uses lag compensation, (poorly) so the better the ping, the more likely we are to be host and get wiped off the map. when I'm not host I wipe them off the map, They are trying to bring in updates to balance it out, so hang in there.
I would try to hard wire your ps3 though, to eliminate the wireless lag from the ps3 to the router.

      Hi,

      Thanks for the replies.

I've always run the PS3 upstairs wirelessly... never really had any issues for well over
2 or so years. As mentioned, I've only started having these frequent issues since Fibre
has been installed. Hard wiring isn't an option due to the localities of the router and PS3.

I did try using some 80Mbps home plugs but these exhibit exactly the same issues.

FYI, using the PS3 internet connection test gave very similar U/S & D/S speeds for both
      WiFi and Home-Plug.

@ Fryingpan77, you could well have hit the nail on the head with the lag compensation
implementation on MW3.... I tried MW2 and it ran as smooth as silk

They are trying to bring in updates to balance it out, so hang in there.
      I'll keep my fingers crossed

I'm hoping it gets sorted too. It's not totally unplayable, Maybe 2/3 games in 10 for me. When I can't hit a barn door at 10 yards, I just jump out and find another lobby
