      Weird IP Address Location

I recently upgraded to fibre, and live in Northern Ireland. However, my IP address shows up as being from Scotland (or sometimes northern England). This seems very odd to me - anyone else have this with fibre? It was all fine when we had ADSL.

      Re: Weird IP Address Location

I'm not sure that IP address geolocation is a very reliable way to determine where you are for Fibre users. Mine is currently located in either London, Yorkshire or Hampshire depending on which IP Address location website I use.

Admittedly I think it was correct when I was on ADSL, but I think on Fibre there must be a different way of allocating IP addresses (maybe many & locally based DHCP servers on ADSL and fewer & centrally based DHCP servers on Fibre).

Only Sky know for sure how their network is configured.

Anyway when I Google Aldi, Halfords etc I get a local result - because I have set my location manually to where I am...

      Re: Weird IP Address Location

Your location is dictated by the Sky server you are connected to, not your actual location. This is true of ADSL as well, except when you are on legacy Easynet exchange equipment, when your actual exchange/location is located.

Agreed. When I was on ADSL, my line was connected to an Easynet DSLAM at the local exchange and my location was always reported correctly as the town where I live.

Why should someone from N.I. be routed through the London server? Surely the nearest server is the correct choice? London is not the centre of the Universe you know.
