      Speed Test Variability

Up to now, I have used Speedtest.net which has given me a very respectable 75.1 Mbms download and 14.75 Mbms upload on Fibre Pro. But I just tested using the Sky User speed test which showed 63.75 Mbms download and 8.6 Mbms upload! My question is why is there such a variablity and which is likely to me most accurate?

      Re: Speed Test Variability

There will be a raft of reasons why you will get a variation in your test results. The most obvious is that many other people across the UK on many other connections will also be testing using the same server as you at the same time.

There is only a finite amount of bandwidth available with the speed testers.

There are over 3 million broadband customers alone with Sky. When you take into account all the others, then is soon becomes clear that a lot of people are interested is checking the connection speeds.

Tbh...when I was on ADSL with Zen my "Speedtest.net" results were very consistent and where they should be... Currently my results are all over the place but I'm assuming that this is because the line is settling down..

It's one thing for a server to supply 2 - 10Mbit/s to a user and quite another to supply 50Mbit/s + to a single user

Quite a lot of servers are still on 100Mbit/s connections, the speedtest servers are probably at least 1Gbit but when a single user can easily have 70 - 80Mbit/s these-days it really wouldn't take many people testing to congest one.

      Re: Speed Test Variability

Seems like a fair point chap....but still doesn't feel right that there is variability in one and not in the other.....as given the view that the amount of people testing....I cannot see why a 10mb connection v a 40mb connection on one person should result in signifcant variability between the two.....as said I'm assuming mine is due to the recent installation.

      Re: Speed Test Variability

I alwys uses downloads rather than speedtests.

Maidstone Custodian Centre which I believe is a data centre and not a prision always gave me top speed on virgin but then namesco did too.

I find a download from microsoft always does the trick. Sorry if this is against the forum rules but here's a link I always use which i for win 8 trials.

Windows 8 Release Preview ISO formats
