Experiencing slow HTTP Download speeds, Please try this!

Hi, [EDIT] Just to clarify, this will NOT help the half speed issues at all [/EDIT]
I've noticed a number of people wondering about slower than torrents/usenet download speeds. I'd like to try and help this by offering some quick words of advice.

By default, a torrent client for example is configured to connect to 50-200 peers depending on the client. That's 50-200 individual connections feeding yours.

Usenet clients are sometimes similar but will connect to the same server 2 or more times to gain performance and avoid throttling.

You can enable this for all HTTP Downloads (and trust me, this makes a huge difference, I've seen it on my own connection, 4.51MB/s) is firstly install Firefox - Any version will do but I'd recommend Aurora (Mozilla Firefox Web Browser | Download Firefox Aurora for Desktop - Free) - This is so we can install an addon called DownthemAll!

      What is DownThemAll?
Simply, it's a download manager. Most servers offering larger downloads when put under a load will begin to throttle all connections to the server in the hope of conserving a small amount of bandwidth for HTML traffic and to keep server responsiveness up.

This means slower downloads for pretty much everyone. There is an easy way to get around this though! Most servers are stupid and don't bother doing IP based throttling, only connection based throttling. If you connect to the server multiple times, then you'll have multiple throttled connections which should hopefully max your connection speed.

This is what DownThemAll does. It by default connects to a server 4 times at 4 different periods in the file - and this mitigates factors such as throttling (not the only factor, but a big one).

Seriously, give DownThemAll! a go. Just for comparison, Downloading a Ubuntu ISO from the Virgin Media mirror using WGET (One single connection, same as Firefox or Chrome) - 3.6MB/s constant, occasionally fluctiationg down to 3.2MB/s, with an average of 3.45MB/s.

DownThemAll! - 4.51MB/s with an occasional drop to 4.2MB/s but average works out at about 4.45MB/s.

      It's seriously worth it.

If you do this, post results!

Install both Aurora and DownloadThemAll and had the following

      XP SP3 download

      Before add-on: 4.5MB/s
      After Add-on: 4.5Mb/s

      Ubuntu

      Before Add-on: 4.5MB/s
      After Add-on: 4.5MB/s

strange as XP SP3 used to download slower, although the last time i tried it was during the day.

Good browser and app though. Will keep an eye on it

It'll only really benefit you if the server you're downloading from is quite heavy congested, but it's a fantastic download manager nonetheless, it's a bottomless pit of useful features

Yes I will keep an eye on this one! Thanks kn.

I have noticed that it is only in the evening. I strongly believe that the Sky network is congested now. First time in 4 years I've had to deal with congestion, but my main download source is Usenet and I can pull 7.3MB/s all day long (because I can feed it 50 connections) and that's fine by me.

When it is slower, it isn't "slow", just not the 65Mbit that my sync rate is....

Presumably you think this is "local" congestion (i.e. your exchange) that you are seeing?

I think I'm the only one who has complained about it on here, so must be "local" traffic.

I do hope Sky keep upgrading their bandwidth though. Not a lot I can do aside from leaving Sky, or moving house.
