Which speed tester do you belive ??

      Hi all
Since my Fibre was installed on Thursday I have been checking my speeds as I was not happy from the start and believe that I have one of the "half speed" problems as posted on this and other sites. The results I am getting from the various sites that I have used are so different that I am finding it impossible to get a true handle on to what my actual speed is. For example this morning the results are ........................
      Sky user 29.88 / 1.58
BT wholesale fibre test site 33.69 / 1.68
      Speedtest .net 13.4 / 1.71
      My Broadband 15.2 / 1.70
      U switch 15.4 / 1.6
      Think bb 16.5 / 1.6

This is not a one off variance as previous tests have all given similar pictures .

I fully realize that test results can vary for many different reasons, but there seems to be basically 2 sets of data ie 2 in a high band and 4 in a low band this has been how they have generaly looked as well on previous tests.
Just wondered if the bt tests and the sky user one "work" differently from other ones?
I have done all tests via a Ethernet connection and my router shows a sync of 39996 /2000
I have also downloaded a 1 gig test file and that came down at 1.78 .

I realize that i am still on the 10 day DLM BUT I have not seen any "improvement" in my stats over the last 3 days.

      Any comments greatly appreciated
      Cheers !

If you are a Windows user, have a look at JD's Auto Speed Tester from JD's Auto Speed Tester - Home which you could use in order to automatically test at regular intervals over a few days to build up a profile of your connection.

Thanks will take a look at it. Just spent 1 hour reading all the 17 pages of posts on the "half speed" issue and feel that i am in the "same boat" ! I am going to give sky fibre a call and "register" my problems to try and get some thing sorted out.Wish i had read all of the posts prior to it being installed on Thursday as i would have got the open reach guys that were here for over 6 hours to phone in for a profile reset that may have cured it. It can not have helped that during their stay they must have connected / reconnected my line 20 or 30 times which i guess may have given the DLM a BIG problem to overcome, if it ever will ????
      Thanks for the input !

There's a half-speed thread over at the Sky Help Forum too, which you might want to have a look at for completeness (although I believe this forum is much better for getting a more informed discussion of problems and responses with some technical understanding).

Thanks ! Have just finished reading that one as well. Even more sure now that a phone call is needed to try and get it sorted.

Try downloading a couple of large test files, this will give you a better idea of your real world speed than any speed tester,
thinkbroadband :: Download Test Files (1 Gb)
Windows 8 Release Preview ISO formats (3.3 or 2.5 Gb)

Yes, you think right, you should be getting 4+Mb. A phone call is definitely in order.

Re: Which speed tester do you belive ??

Have you tried downloading a linux distro Skycarp? Reason I ask is, msot of the time i don't get maximum speed from either think broadband or Microsoft, but downloading Ubuntu Linux distro shows me speeds of over 4mb/s

Also which server for speedtest are you using? Try using the massey server in France, i usually get good consistenant speeds from them.

What does BBC's Iplayer state as well when you perform a test on that?
