Have received Sky Fibre email - a few questions....

I currently have Sky Unlimited and have a line speed of about 3.6mb. I have a filtered faceplate and a Sky wireless N range router.

I have gone onto the BT Infinity checker and it says that I could receive up to 56mg ! This all seems too good to be true. The extra costs are 20 a month instead of 7.50 and possibly an installation fee (although I do have the correct router and type of faceplate already by the sound of it).

Of course it is up to 56mb but am I missing something ? By ordering this, it would give me significant speed increase and works on a part copper wire/part fibre optic basis ?

There are two Fibre products available from Sky: Sky Fibre Unlimited (SFU) and Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro (SFUP)

Currently SFU is an 40/2 product (i.e. up to 40mb download and up to 2mb upload). It is possible that the upload speed will be increased to up to 10mb.

SFUP is an 80/20 product and provides up to 80mb download and up to 20mb upload.

In your case SFU would be capped at 40/2 (perhaps 40/10 later) and SFUP would provide you around 56/??.

BT Checker tells me I would get 56Mb. My BTO Modem on the other hand claims a max attainable rate of 72Mbit.

Come on Sky, where's the damn 80/20 option

It is true that the predicted speeds are conservative. I didn't realise how much FTTC is susceptible to interference from neighbouring lines at first. Should your cabinet become full then it is likely that your connection speed will drop closer to the original estimate.

It is available now for new fibre orders made by phone. Hopefully an upgrade option will become available over the next couple of months.
