      Virgin Wireless v Sky Wireless

      Evening All

Ok I fully understand the difference between wired and wireless speeds.
I even understand the difference between wireless n and g devices and how that effects speed tests.

      My question is this:-
I am using an iPhone 4S therefore it's connecting using N type speed.
My speed using the speed test app regularly shows around 24m download which is fine. The wired connection shows 37/38 so no complaint there either. The modem is syncing at 40/2 so all fine. However when I do a speed test using the same app on a friends Virgin wifi router, it roars up to 37/5. So the IPhone is capable of such speeds yet only get around 23/24 download on the Sky router when I get far more on the Virgin router.
      Why?

I suspect that the iPhone is wanting to connect at 150mbps on the VM router using a paired channel.

The Sky router works at up to 144mbps on a single channel.

The net result is that your iPhone will connect at no more than 72mbps.

      Hi Scubbie
Ok so the VM router is faster than the Sagem
But if the Sagem still has a max rate of 72mps download, why do we only get 24mps?

      Sorry if being thick.

I think that the quoted speeds are bi-directional. You can always expect a little less due to interference as well.

I have a 300mbps WiFi connection on my Laptop and I have just done the following experiment between my NAS and my Laptop:

WiFi g cable router: Copying a file at 1.8MB/s (56mbps)
WiFi n (300mb/s): Copying the same file at just over 9MB/s (fluctuated between 8 & 10MB/s), using an ftp client I was getting figures between 8MB/s and 18MB/s.

My torrent computer is currently working and may explain the fluctuations in speed a little.
