We managed to get through the instructions first time and he successfully updated the firmware.

Could you check that you have the latest version (v3) of the HG612 and the firmware for it too.

      Otherwise the instructions are fine.

      In summary:
      • download standard firmware
      • change IP settings on laptop to 192.168.1.10
      • connect directly to Modem port #2
      • press the reset button as prescribed
      • open your browser and access the Modem's GUI
      • change the firmware to the standard firmware

      Hey Presto!
192.168.1.10? are you its not 192.168.1.100?

oh btw... I am using PC ethernet not laptop ethernet...

follow scubbies steps, when inputing the ip address on your pc change add the ip address (192.168.1.100) and subnet mask (255.255.255.0) only.

once you have reset the modem navigate to 192.168.1.1 on your browser, username and password are both admin

Shouldn't matter what IP you use, 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254 are all valid because they correspond with that subnet.

Unless of course, the Echo Life has some kind of weird filter to only allow .100 to access it, but I wouldn't have thought so.

Re: Yay! I am a new sky fibre bb customer!

i had a batch file from a user on here...

      @ECHO OFF
ECHO Setting IP Address and Subnet Mask
netsh int ip set address "Local Area Connection" static 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.254
      echo.
ECHO IP Settings Changed, Launching EchoLife Home Gateway:
      start iexplore.exe http://192.168.1.1
      pause
REM ***** Returns to defaults ******
netsh int ip set address "Local Area Connection" dhcp
netsh int ip set dns "Local Area Connection" dhcp

      would this work?

I had problems similar to what you have. I would make sure you disable wireless connection, reboot laptop/pc, then run command prompt with admin rights and type ipconfig /flushdns then follow the instructions of the guide.
