Weird problem regarding broadband and network...

Right, I got fibre installed last week and it's all good apart from one thing.

My main PC is getting the full speed 37-38mb

The missus' PC (Wireless N connected at 72mb) getting 27mb

My media PC which is under my TV that I do all my downloading on (Wired like my main PC) is only getting 23-24mb max.

I've done all the usual troubleshooting and can't for the life of me figure out the problem. I can copy files from my main pc to the media PC and I am getting the full speed to copy.

Didn't know where to post as it's a few problems in one.

      Cheers peeps

I have to say the sky fiber speeds do vary a lot depending on which mode you use, I had terrible wired speeds, until I found out it was my old laptop which couldn't handle the speeds..

My wife's very nice new compaq flys, wireless is sadly slow as hell in g mode i don't know about N as I'm in the process of upgrading to wireless n..

      I've fixed it - I think.

I tried a CD linux disk and did a speed test through that, and what do you know, I was getting full speed.

So I re-install windows on the PC, speed test as soon as I have network drivers installed, full 37mb download. Install all my stuff I need, back down to 25mb...

So, cut a long story short, I found out that it was Avast live shields that were cutting the speed down dramatically. Switch the live shields off, full speed.

Thing is, I have the exact same on my main PC, no problems. Main PC is a hell of a lot faster though.

Anyway,. glad is sorted and hope this helps anyone else having problems.

I did find that that AV & firewall software on my Torrent computer severally limited the speed that it could copy files across my LAN. I changed things around and instead of copying at around 120mbps, it can now copy files at up to 400-450 mbps.

This is on a 1Gbit LAN connection to my NAS drive.

Previously Sky Fibre & Sky BB since 2010.
