Just got fibre installed but not gettin 40mb

This is a discussion on Just got fibre installed but not gettin 40mb within the Sky Broadband (Fibre) Help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; Download speed is about 2mb/s which seems about right in relation to the sync speed (18/8=2.25)...

I take it you mean 2MB/s At least you don't have cap on your download like many others. Maybe you should call Sky and tell them you are not in the least happy with your speed as it is less than half what was estimated. There may be a fault on the copper side of the connection. Are you another where the BTO engineer did not bother connecting and telling you what speed the modem was connecting?

Yeah sorry I meant MB, not mb. I restarted the modem and router but I'm getting the same sync speed.

Yes the BTO guy mentioned nothing about speed, just said everything had been setup and left. I take it this is a normal occurrence might have to get on the then? Was he supposed to check the speed?

Looks like phoning sky would be the way to go.

Re: Just got fibre installed but not gettin 40mb

Experiences seem to vary, some like you got the basic treatment, others have their wiring fixed where required, even to the extent of replacing the drop wire. It seems to depend on the individual engineer.

Call Sky, they will probably use the 'you must wait 10 days' fob off, but they should be advised that you are not happy.

There appears to be a big difference between those who had their installation done during the 'trial' period and those who are having it done now. I wonder if it is down to the earlier engineers being better trained. The later ones may just have had a basic training course.

As I understand it, he is supposed to check that the connection works (ie the modem can get out to the internet). Experiences differ as to whether the BT Engineer also tells you what the line is capable of - depends on how helpful he is feeling and/or whether he has the kit to do it in the van.

The download sync speed (shown on the router) should match what BT/Sky's checker told you. Being able to actually download at the sync rate (shown on the router) depends on wired/wireless connection, etc, etc and POSSIBLY a fault in the cabinet/exchange.

Re: Just got fibre installed but not gettin 40mb

At the risk of splitting what remaining hair I have got left:

MBps or MB/s = Megabytes per second
Mbps or Mb/s = Megabits per second

Similarly for KBps and Kbps (Kilobytes and Kilobits).

8 bits in a byte and all that...

Over at the tbb forum, asbokid reports that:

"Your Sky Sagemcom F@ST2504n router is obtaining the line sync speed from a Sky server. The 2504n is not getting those line statistics from the Openreach VDSL2 CPE modem."

Re: Just got fibre installed but not gettin 40mb

There's a Sky Knowledge Advisor response in the "Half speed" thread over on Sky Help Forum:

"Hi all, I've had a word with the fibre team about this. It is not a known issue at present. The vast majority of the calls they have had regarding similar issues have been identified as being due to the computing and networking equipment being used or the software installed on them.
There are a small number of examples for which the cause could not be identified and these have been passed to our network team for further investigation.

If anyone is experiencing throughput issues where the actual speed is significantly lower than the connection speed I'd advise testing on multiple sites. If they show the same speed then test a couple of different modern PC/MAC (if possible) using a wired connection directly in to the router (no mains networking kit or wireless adapters). Make sure no other devices are connected to the router at the same time.

If the throughput is still significantly lower than the connection speed then let us or the fibre team know and we will take it from there."

Re: Just got fibre installed but not gettin 40mb

Does this mean that sky have for some reason capped the line at 18mb?

The example above is when the actual speed is half of the sync speed but my sync speed is low, throughput is fine (in relation to sync).

Re: Just got fibre installed but not gettin 40mb

I phoned sky, they said since it's still the day of the install, they can't do any line checks.

They told me to ring back tomorrow and they'll investigate then.
