      Sent from my ST18i
That's probably it, some might think I am pretty thick when it comes to broadband and PCs.

re: Sky Admits fault with Sky and BT network resulting in slow connects @ 1/2 speed

I tried that think broadband speed test but it gave me rubbish results - 18megs and the full test said 11.8 megs down.

      Still synced at 39992/2000 here.

OK here is something to try for everyone on half speeds...

Go here and download the 32 bit file of windows 8 preview:

Windows 8 Release Preview ISO formats

I am using Safari on the latest mac OS X version - all bang up to date - latest patches etc.

I get 1.4 mb a sec download speed on this file - pathetic!

Now, then , this would lead me to believe i have a connection half speed problem.. but I have been doing some research lately..

If you aren't getting your full bandwidth speed on this download - try this - go here and download the FREE TRIAL version of a program called igetter (Windows and Mac versions available),

Get The Latest Version Of iGetter!

go to preferences - acceleration - change the default number of segments to 10.

Now use this program to download the windows 8 trial - what happens?

Well, for me anyway - suddenly - I get 3.79MB a sec it reports in the dock tray as my speed.

Now can someone tell me why I have to open 10 connections and use this download manager in able to get my full speed?

I am not new to download managers- I remember using them years ago at the tail end of dial up modem use - then once broadband arrived - I abandoned them...

I just thought I would share this info and would like feedback on if it suddenly gives people their full bandwidth - it is for me anyway but why??

What is making this fast windows 8 site think I can't handle more than 1.4 megs when the OS is left to its own devices to download the file???

      Give it a shot folks!

re: Sky Admits fault with Sky and BT network resulting in slow connects @ 1/2 speed

Spoke to the Sky Fibre team again today regarding my ongoing {since install 4 weeks ago }"half speed" problem. They stated that after looking into it more closely they have decided that it is not a router issue, and that the one that was meant to be on its way will not now be sent.
The latest info that i was given was that they are looking into each half speed problem on an individual basis, HOWEVER they do accept that there seems to be a certain problem that is causing the "half speed" issue that is common to a number of users ,of which they said that i am one. I asked if this was a DNS server issue and was told no it was not. They said that they were working with their "partners" { I take that to be BT} to try and resolve the problem asap, BUT it may take a "week or two" to do so, and would advise me as to when { or if ?} it was resolved.
Has any one any more or different info on the current situation ??

re: Sky Admits fault with Sky and BT network resulting in slow connects @ 1/2 speed

So, my brother in law had his fibre install today. He had a lot of bother with ADSL so Sky give him Fibre at a discount, and guess what ?

      HALF SPEED PROBLEMS

The BTO guy played a blinder and fobbed him off.
Didn't move his phone Socket, plonked the modem behind the TV (not even wall mounted) and used all his old wiring from his ADSL set up.
He didn't even stay until he completed a speed test.

He rung Sky and they have detected faults on his line and did a reset, so Sky appear to be having more control over Sky fibre Broadband, which is a good thing.
The Sky CS person did also try and fob him off about the BTO setup saying,
"It is not BTO's responsability to rewire your modem to a more suitable place".
      THAT MADE ME LAUGH

BTO are coming back Monday to try and sort this out.

This time I WILL BE WAITING FOR THEM
      With sky since 1997.

I think it may be a case of the engineers being so pushed they don't have time to do the job properly. I seem to remember in the begining they were allowed 2 hours for an install, which allowed them to do everythiong necessary, it is possible with the rush on fibre the time has been cut. That does not excuse a bodged job, they will still be getting paid the full amount by Sky to do an installation.

I don't know how true this is but I read somewhere that due to high demand some FTTC installations are being done by engineers who normally do voice only work and may not have the full testing equipment. Presumably they are fully trained though. Perhaps this is why some installations are seemingly done quickly and without any testing?

The guy that did my install normally was out commissioning fibre cabinets. He was having a good ol' moan about their new job allocation system that is supposed to allocate them jobs in the local area. He had another job locally after my install then he had a 30 mile drive to Uckfield for the next job.

Whilst he was doing the install one of his collegues phoned him from the Uckfield exchange. Definitely a good system if it send two engineers on two separate jobs 30 miles from their base.

still on going problem though sky closeed my last open fault ticket and opened a new one. I am guessing to avoiding it hitting their stats by not resolving a problem
