I watched my first 4K resolution Youtube video a few days ago, maxed out my 40Mb connection (d/l meter showing 38.2Mb) and it paused quite a few times in order to buffer. Just like the old days (3 weeks ago) of my 4Mb ADSL connection when trying to watch a 1080p clip

I've got the excuse now to upgrade to Fibre Pro next month..

What were you watching it on though?
Unless you're using a high end projector, you're not doing it justice

Just tried it myself, didn't buffer once?
It did however burn my lap, OS X and flash don't go well together

Just took a look on my bog standard 18.5mb down and it didn't buffer once, but that must be because the movies are ridiculously compressed, which would explain the aweful quality (much worse than 720p on my monitor). It makes you wonder why anyone would bother...

I've got an Eyefinity monitor set-up which helps

Try viewing a Youtube video from "TheOriginal4kChannel" (and remember to change the video size to "Original Size"). As Stevvi mentions, it's all about compression and the 5 minute video I watched from that Youtube channel I think came to about 1.8GB, which is why the 40Mb connection couldn't stream it fast enough.

I didn't want to start an argument about who can watch 4K and why would you, rather that we are already seeing stuff out there which has already exceeded the ability of a fast internet connection. I'm looking forward to streaming the same clip when I am on SFU-Pro

I think it is the race to be one of the first with a 4K video post. Check out the "TheOriginal4kChannel" channel I mentioned in my other post. Good quality as you would expect for 5 minutes @ 1.8GB ish Just remember to change the video size to "Original Size", and not 1080p or any of the others.

I just tried that 'Garden' 4K video on youtube and it buffered once about halfway through, although looking at network monitor it was only streaming at about 15mbps so it wasn't even utilising half of my available bandwidth. Guess youtube need more capacity for 4k

Did you set the quality to "Original"? Otherwise you probably viewed it in 360p.

I meant to say before - are you trying the video size at "original size" which is listed above 1080p?

Not sure why we are getting different results then. I'll try it again when I am next at home.

Actually it turns out I'm terribly wrong, I didn't factor in the CPU usage which was at 100% and reduced my throughput to around 15mbps. Pausing the video so it didn't have to use the cpu to render allowed it to buffer at full speed, looking at the speed it was buffering at I'd guess 39mbps will struggle.

On another note... think I need to upgrade my computer hardware
