      Fibre ping time improvements?

I'm an avid gamer, so improving ping times is something I'm always looking for. Right now I get pretty decent pings on the sky unlimited package set to fast path.

Just wondering, how much of an improvement can you guys estimate fibre will make ?

For all you fibre users, can you post your before and after pings please + post results of a ping to bbc.co.uk

      Thanks a bunch!

      Re: Fibre ping time improvements

If your on fastpath it will make zero difference
fastpath is around 3.5ms to the dslam (round trip time)
then how far you are from linx

Its hard to compare various people's pings on VDSL2 as they are in different parts of the country
and have different route's to linx

I have seen people on VDSL2 with 5ms to 35ms pings
but 5ms is quite easliy achieved on ADSL2+ if you are close to London

      Re: Fibre ping time improvements

Example from where I am 160 miles from london on ADSL2+

      Linux

      --- bbc.co.uk ping statistics ---
64 packets transmitted, 64 packets received, 0% packet loss
      round-trip min/avg/max = 10.627/11.136/11.353 ms

      Windows
      Ping statistics for 212.58.241.131:
      Packets: Sent = 64, Received = 64, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
      Minimum = 10ms, Maximum = 11ms, Average = 10ms

      On
Delays 8 Up (8ms delay on the upstream path)
Delays 8 Down (8ms delay on the downstream path)
      Imp 1.0

      Results in a 28ms ping
with 16ms of that ping being from the interleaving
and the remaining from impulse noise protection

Everyone posting will have been on delays 8 16 or 32 on ADSL2+

      Re: Fibre ping time improvements

Thanks for the speedy reply Shonk
Some unfamiliar things in your post for me or things I didn't understand. Am I right in thinking your on fast path because fastpath is interleaving being changed from 32 to 8 by sky? Also you added the 8 from the downstream and upstream onto the ping you got from windows... I always thought the ping I got in windows included the changes made to interleaving.. since I noticed a change.

You can tell I'm a newcomer with this kind of stuff.

Also, since i've been on fastpath if the modem syncs too fast, say 5.2mbits I know that in the evening I will see a lot of errors on the line leading to poor throughput, packet loss, the noise margin dropping real low and all the rest meaning I'm forced to reboot to get a lower more stable speed. If I get a sync at 4.8 ish I'll see errors but nothing that causes problems. Now I've established that the errors aren't due to something in my house, not sure where along the line they occur outside my house though. Would fibre help with this?

      Re: Fibre ping time improvements

If you are on the Sky Gamer Profile with 8ms delays

      Thats not fastpath

Fastpath is no error correction on the line and 0 delays

The Sky Gamer Profile is Interleaved with 8ms delay on the downstream and 8ms delay on the upstream
And since a ping is a round trip process this results in 16ms of delay to you ping from the interleaving

So if you go VDSL2 (I wont call it Fibre as it isnt and it winds me up how people call it such )
you should see around a 17-18ms reduction on your ping if bt's dlm considers your line good enough

I would be interested in the findings to this too. if it's really worth the upgrade when speed doesn't really necessarily matter to you.

      Re: Fibre ping time improvements

The upgrade has made a big differance to my ingame ping.
Before on our own BF3 server the ping used to be around 50ms - now it stays at 8ms always.

      Re: Fibre ping time improvements

well, this tells me BF3 will be alot better on fibre....i wonder what Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be on fibre, the same 8ms I wonder?
      very simular games BF3 & MW3.

I have a load of steam/valve games that use the source engine, I owner how well they will run on fibre.

atm i can get about 130-200 latency to USA...on source engine games...on GB servers I get around 50-55 latency.

I am getting excited now! 7 days by tommorow...27th install date due...

      Re: Fibre ping time improvements

I was getting 30ms ping with sky adsl with max delay set to 8.

sky vdsl2 on install had a ping of 9ms

I have a bad line with lots of errors so it kicked interleaving in i now have a ping of 18ms.

If I get my line sorted it might help my line.
