Sky Fibre only available to 17% of sky customers.

Sky just rang for a chit chat and found out that at the moment, SBUF is only available to 17% of sky customers but are planning to expand this as quickly as possible. No time scale was given.

Thats because its based on the BT Fibre rollout. Sky can only go as fast as BT can.

Re: Sky Fibre only available to 17% of sky customers.

      Thank you for this information.

I guess that there are several factors at the present moment which will explain this low figure:
      • BTO's FTTC roll out
      • Currently Sky hasn't launched an FTTP based product
      • Sky's LLU kit needs to be updated

Whilst we were under the impression pre-launch that all the exchanges with Sky's LLU equipment and FTTC had been updated, it is obvious now that this is not the case. It has been mentioned that many of the current exchanges with both FTTC & Sky LLU will be updated in May, but we will need confirmation to be 100% sure.

As for those exchanges which haven't been upgraded or are currently being upgraded to house FTTC and FTTP connections, Sky will need to update these too in due course. It would be nice to know how long this would typically take, but currently I guess that Sky doesn't want us to know as it would be 'commercially sensitive'.

I apologise that we got this one wrong on the FAQ pre-launch, but we posted the best information that we could at the time. It would have been nice for someone in Sky to have provided some accurate information, but I guess they didn't want to.

I have little or no faith in the accuracy of any information gleaned from a Sky Fibre rep at the moment, it all has to be taken with a pinch of salt, as it's just so irratic and changes on a daily basis, depending on who you speak to.

The few reps I've spoken to, openly admit that the situation is very fluid and they really are the last people to know anything, therefore find it hard to give concrete information on the most basic of questions.

The thing I found interesting about the info is BT fttc is available to approx 30% of homes, and sky has approx, a 88% coverage, thinking on the lines that fttc is not available in the area where sky BB is also not available, it gives a indication to people of where sky's fibre rollout is in relation to BT's fttc coverage.

Agreed, They only tell you what they know at the time and at the moment its not alot. Thats not to say things are said to mislead people just that thing change, also how a customer interprets can play a part in misinformation.

Correction: Sky has installed their equipment in just under 2,000 of the 5,600 telephone exchanges in the UK. Last January they announced their intention to increase the current footprint to continue to install kit to cover 88% of the UK.

Sky builds on broadband growth with increased coverage, 10,000 WiFi hotspots and new fibre launch
Building out Sky’s network to reach even more UK homes: Sky is extending its network footprint to bring great value broadband to 88% of the UK by June 2013. This means more than 1 million extra homes will be covered by Sky’s network.

Re: Sky Fibre only available to 17% of sky customers.

No problem, we all make mistakes at times.

Whether Sky will target exchanges which have also been upgraded to include FTTC or are on the current upgrade list, is of course unknown.

I am also aware that Sky Broadband Connect customers can't currently get a Sky Fibre product. These make up around 2 million Sky Broadband customers, with over a million others on Sky Broadband Everyday Lite and Sky Broadband Unlimited.

Obviously we can presume that there is a lot of work happening in the telecommunications side of the UK at the moment for all concerned. Hopefully my exchange will be suitably updated too in time for the FTTC roll-out planned for later this year.

Checked for availability for my house and it is available so I went to the sky.com site and had a look at having it installed. Clicked on having it done and it came up with free installation. Went through with it and it will be installed on the 30th. Good times.
