      LOL - that's what I did.

Postcode checker (with just post code) says no fibre, just ADSL.

Address checker (post code and house number) says "Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 34 Mbps and upstream line speed of 6 Mbps"

I wonder if that has taken tomorrow's BT announcement into account. I am also about 200 yards (tops) from the cabinet so hopefully should get fairly good speeds.

Re: BT Double Fibre Speeds for Free

One thing that I don't quite get is, last year I checked BTI availability to my address and it stated around 23 down 2 up. Now it is saying my line suddenly supports 49 down 10 up.
So if they were offering me the chance of 'up to' 40/2 last year yet told me my line would only support 23/2 what has changed ?
My line hasn't changed and as they now quote speeds of 49/10 why couldn't I get the full 40/2 last year ................ or are the figures quoted just a little exaggerated ?
We are always told that your line is the one factor that determines your available speeds, so this would indicate to me that they have managed to halve the distance of my line to the cabinet

Anyone please explain it in simple terms please

      Pete.

The have changed the vDSL standard to one that is much faster now.

This has been rolled out by BTO over the past year or so.

The max speed you can get isnt a set limit that your line will never go above its the speed the signal drops to by the time it reaches your property and so is in relation to the speed the signal started off as, before the max VDSL download speed was 40 but 23 by time it reached you, now the max VDSL speed has increased to 80 and so is now being estimated as 49 by time it reaches you.

I do wonder how accurate the checker is. Suppose I will have to wait until I finally get it to see my "max attainable" figure

Re: BT Double Fibre Speeds for Free

@gorebrush: I would say they are the 'bare minimum speeds' that fiber will give you: prior to connecting yesterday, using the checker indicated that my speed would be up to 34 down and up to 6 up; Sky also used this figure quoting me 34.8meg down when I ordered. Connected yesterday at 39999 down and 1999 up, got the BTO guy to plug his gizmo in (which he didn't think would work) and it said my max attainable was 54 down (didn't tell me the upload or if he did, I wasn't listening - too busy thinking of the dl!) Checking the Bt wholesale checker today (using full address and postcode) still quotes 34 down and 6 up!
