Do I really NEED Sky Fibre ?

      Hi all,

      As above really.

We only have 1 desktop PC in the house which is used for general SOHO stuff (surfing, email, etc and occasional download of large files like Linux distros). Other than that we have 2 smart phones which occasionally use the home WiFi and occasionally use BBC iPlayer from either the Wii or PC.

Whilst 35-40Mbps would be very nice, compared to the current 6.5Mbps at the moment, I [ or rather my other half ] am struggling to justify the extra 10pm Sky Fibre would cost.

So is there anything I am missing in terms of the benefits of Fibre broadband for, effectively, a single user ? I can't see there being much benefit when it comes to general surfing and email retrieval.

      Regards,

      Adam Brunt

The fact that you are asking the question probably indicates you don't need it. Most of us dont to be honest its just nice to not have to wait for stuff to download. Benefits for me coming from a 10 meg connection are:

Instantly available anytime plus programs (rather than waiting 5 mins for 5%)
Instantly downloaded software, updates, video etc.

However you could look at it another way though. If you have close neighbours you could end up saving money by sharing the one fibre connection. 40 meg could easily serve 4 households and you would still see the benefits while saving money. Depends on how well you know your neighbours though. Not sure if this violates any sky terms. Can't see why it should.

      "It's never, ever, fast enough"

Joking aside though, you probably don't need it if you can't justify it

An interesting scheme .... can't see how Sky would ever find out. You'd need your neighbour(s) to have a wireless router that could connect/bridge to another wireless router and be close enough for N-range to reach.

It would even harder to justify if I don't get it without paying the 50 installation fee

Yeah I'm hoping I get away with that one as well

You could say that BT Infinity have offered free installation and see if they'll match it...

      Excert from T & Cs-
      2. Using Sky Broadband

      (a) Sky Broadband is for private use by you and members of your household only. It must not be used for any commercial or business purpose.
I doubt very much if they would consider 3 or 4 neighbours members of your household.
