I remember being happy if my speed kept at a constant 4k/s........while living in a hole in the road (yeah I know, sheer luxury). Mind you, that was back when you could get office, windows OS and several other apps on one single-sided floppy disk, and still have enough money left over for a good night out.

WOW - Never been to a pub that accepted part used floppy disks for payment. I could get very drunk if I found one.

Re: Virgin throttles broadband for high-speed customers

Well I am starting to learn that high speeds come at a price.. that price (in VM's case anyway) is natzi orders of when to use it, for how long and how.

We are hopefully leaving them tomorrow I gave their CE Office a right roasting. Told them of my personal circumstance and that they had 2 choices - like it or lump it.

I have made sure Sky know and they don't care. ALl bills with them are up to date (as with VM) and I know that should I decide to spend 2 hours getting something from USENET I could..

VM want everyone to download less and for shorter so the network does not clog up - our argument at one point was give people full speeds and then they will spend less. if your speed is half then you HAVE to spend longer doing your thing - that's common sense - to all but VM! according to them the 110 million they are spending on faster speeds would actually have no impact on the networks ability to cope if they put in more BW - This network must cost them billions then to run..

Yes I do a lot of downloading I know this - but I also feel that it's just because I can. I can still download and upload on Sky but it will just be slower. I can deal with that. I'm getting old anyway!

I have always spent time when considering a move to see if it has cable but from now on it will be to see if there is sky fibre!

I would be interested to see what happens with sky fibre in relation to speed - but i am sure they will be fine. Me and a few others have started an online campaign for sky fibre.. I am sure that we can get some of the 21,981 reported households on our exchange to register for it! Most of them might well have VM but I am sure if they are like me with all the recent changes they will be scratching to move. Why all around us but us is being enables is beyond me. especially when some exchanges have 1/4 of the lines!

The Isle of wight has less lines and they have FTTC! grrr

Time (and my hope) will tell!

According to the Openreach page, all of the Isle of Wight doesn't have FTTC yet. Cowes, for example, is marked as 'Coming Soon'.

Since the cost of living is a little higher on the Island that the rest of the UK, I'm sure we won't begrudge them too much for wanting to get Fibre.

Poor 100Mb users! It's all very well doubling broadband speeds, but if they are cut half of the time, what's the point?
