New Router at Sky Broadband Fibre Unlimited launch?

I read here on the forum somewhere that Sky are to provide a new fibre router when fibre officially launches in April. One that is not the "make-shift" modified Sagem currently given to pre-registered signups.

Is this true and does anyone have information or photos?

I can sign up now or risk it in the hopes of a better router as I got a call today. I just want to make an informed choice as the current modified router, of which I have the original doesn't cover my house properly and I need one that is gigabit if possible.

      Thanks.

You could always connect a separate 1Gbps switch and a separate wireless access point, maybe not as slick as a single router that does everything you need, but a working solution to the problem.

Re: New Router at Sky Broadband Fibre Unlimited launch?

One option that some members are now using is the following:

BTO Modem --> Sky Router --> Own Cable Router

By setting up the Sky router and your own Cable router as shown in Tom's thread (link below) the Sky router effectively passes all traffic straight through to your own router. This does allow your own router to manage the LAN and Internet connection. Whilst the instructions are for the D-Link DIR613, they work perfectly well with any other Cable router.

im sure you're clever enough to realise that just because the time stamp shows 15mins difference, it doesn't automatically mean it is 100% accurate and also, new router info or pics deserved its own thread. i appreciate you taking the time to help.

i need the router to be gigabit so it is not bottlenecked at the router before wireless n. it would fall under 100mbps and drop according to distance. i stream HD from a NAS.

Hello Scubbie, been reading various posts of yours, appreciate the advise, im considering the 815 model. 3 things to plug in is the issue. very much hoping someone figures out how to make own router work without sky's one. typing on my phone so apologies for any poor grammar/typos etc. keep the posts coming scubbie, i have learnt so much already from you and ipster.

Re: New Router at Sky Broadband Fibre Unlimited launch?

Thank you, but much of the knowledge I share has been mentioned previously by other members who are experienced in specific areas. Other times I search around the web for the answers where I can.

Since you are looking for a 1Gbit LAN and at least 300mb/s WiFi, could I suggest that you also look at the Netgear stable for Cable routers too? Before jumping in though, do check the Netgear forums. There have been some specific issues (i.e. parental controls, lack of MER support for Sky).

The current Cable Specific routers start with the letters WNDR.

As for plugging in three items, I do appreciate the issue as many will consider the electricity consumption. The actual power usage by a router, with the WiFi disabled, isn't that huge. It will be more an issue with connecting so many items. A suitable Surge-Protected Power Bar would help in this matter.

Re: New Router at Sky Broadband Fibre Unlimited launch?

Sky aren't seriously forcing people to use their routers again are they?

People should always be allowed the option, i mean what do they gain by locking it down and limiting our choice?

It's bad enough openreach expect people to run two separate devices, so adding a third is a bit excessive.
