      That's true, but the problem with speedtesters is that they do not transfer enough data to give an accurate result, especially with a very high speed connection.

      I concur. Although some are better than others.

      But downloading a large file doesn't make accuracy any better.

      I tried a couple more samples, 800mb file from download.com -> 4.36MB/s.
      A 1.2GB update for a game I play 2.76MB/s.

      So it's all server dependant and not based solely on your connection speed.

      For testing the speed of my line I usually set off a number of simultaneous downloads to ensure the line is saturated and then just check the speed using something like bitmeter. You can see exactly what the download is doing.

      The Sky+ HD STB only downloads one item at a time. All others are queued.

      Well, that's exactly why I do worry - especially as when A+ gets close to my 7mbps net (connects at 8) then an HD movie will start in 30-40 seconds. But it only has to drop a small amount from that and it can take over 20 minutes to become available! My fear is things could be a lot worse when the system is thrown open to everyone next week.

      On another point, now I have the new Sagem "N" router I cannot of course use Sky Router Tool to monitor the router's total bandwidth graph. Is there another way to see non-internet download rates?

      Does it keep buffering or something? I dont see what the worry is unless it spoils your viewing.

      No it doesn't buffer - it's just sometimes it will almost max out the connection and other times half of that. And, yes, of course it spoils our viewing as you never know if the movie will start straight away or if you have to wait 20 minutes!

      Re: Anytime +

      You have to take into account the processing power of whichever HD box you're using, if it's one of the older large boxes, it may not be able to cope with writing the data to disk as quickly as your connection is throwing it at it.

      I have 2 DRX890 boxes but no fibre 'till tomorrow but I'll be sure to give them a whirl and then dig out one of the old amstrad HD boxes, pair it up and see how it fares.
