      Authentication - username/password/mer?

Do we know if authentication to the Sky network is performed by the modem (Huawei HG612) or by the router and is it by username/password or MER?

No definitive information, search the forums for the 2504N password generator and try that avenue.

Failing that, Huawei HG612 Hacking. Dig around here, it seems there is a section in the HG612 firmware for username password authentication.

Edit: Assuming you're a Fibre trialist??

Not a trialist but currently use a Draytek 2820 (without MER) and would probably go to another Draytek for fibre (to reduce the clutter/box count) assuming the Draytek would authenticate by itself. If it is MER & the Huwei authenticates I could use my 2820 behind it but if the Sky router authenticates using MER I can see my 2820 not working and having to use the sky router. Three boxes Huwei/Sky/Draytek is a step too far.

If anyone on the fibre trial can plug their PC/laptop directly into the openreach modem - we'd soon know the answer

I think that will answer what's authenticating (modem or router) but not how (MER or other).

One step at a time... If its the modem, then we can probably assume that it will be setup in the same way as other suppliers fibre products... If not I'm betting MER from the router!

MER isn't mentioned in the modem generic user guide at all! Looking promising

      Re: Authentication - username/password/mer?

      right,

i have plugged my mac into both the lan ports on the modem and it will not connect to the internet. using dhcp it gives an ip address that starts with 169. when i ask it to connect over pppoe it asks for the username, password, service provider (optional) and service name (optional). which i do not have and do not need (skys router is adequate for my needs).

when connecting the router to the modem the router shows that it is using MER. also before the BT engineer came to sort the switch i still had my virgin router plugged in but it did not connect to the internet as it was using my old vm username/password. so i tried the sky one and it worked, which would suggest the the username and password is stored in the sky router.

      hope this helps people

I might be mistaken, but I think that you would need to set the IP Address manually.

      Try using the following details:

      IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.10
      IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
      IPv4 DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
      DNS Servers: 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms
