      Re: Sky Fibre hopeful

Well, i am now in a quandry after reading all of this today.

I want to leave virgin after using them for 4 years and being on a 30mb line (due to be upgraded for free to 60mb in July) only for the one reason of....watching F1- virgin want 29 a month extra on top of the 70 a month I pay now. I can have the same with Sky for 70 all in.

So having had a chat with Sky today she told me about this new fibre optic broadband but said it was likely that it wouldnt be released officially until end of April/May time.

Having a GREAT broadband connection is essential for me due to the work that is do as a IT Consultant to retail services. Perusing some threads on here for the last few hours, I see that under the links of exchanges that mine has a AO (Awaiting Order) and that this exxhange is about 1000 meters away.

I have already today registered my interest for the fibre optic, and hopefully if i get a chance would like to test this out, as this could be a new customer coming to sky, who has never used sky before ever!!!!!

      Sky - over to you.

Sky announced at the end of january that it would be April. I would suggest that things are very much on schedule at this stage.

The information about SBUF within Sky, other than by those directly involved, is minimal.

All Sky Broadband packages are not suitable if you really need them for business usage, they are domestic products only. There are some important issues that your should be aware of. Businesses demand: Compensation for loss of business, prioritised response, full VPN support, the ability to use your own router freely and much more.

Having said that, it should be a relatively simple switch to Sky. I would hold off cancelling the VM broadband though until it is live. Sky Broadband is on the whole reliable. If you are only likely to have ADSL2+, then for now your connection speed will depend on your distance from the telephone exchange. since you are 1km from the green street box, you are unlikely to get above a 15mb connection. I am sure that you will have been given a better estimate though.

As for the FTTC speed, I am sure that you should be able to get above 30mb/s.

I thought the op said his exchange was 1000mtr away, could he be connected direct, and not through a green box.
      This might make a difference.

No one can be connected directly to the telephone exchange for FTTC.

For those few who live within a shirt distance of the exchange, there is no green street cabinet that will house the FTTC equipment.

It is possible for someone to live some distance from a green street cabinet though, particularly in the countryside. Without going back over the posts, I assume that this is the case.

      Re: Sky Fibre hopeful

Morning all, and thank you for the replies. Nice to have them when a newbie joins up!!!!!

Scubbie, yes Sky quoted my speed at between 12.9 and 19.8. I didnt realise this was an unofficial forum but its a great place of information.

I think i may be best to wait until april to see if it will be available for me. I just hope that Sky might give me an opportunity to trial it as I have stated to them that i currently use Virgin.

One thing I dont really know much about are these green boxes? I assume that they are being upgraded and that the AO in my original post means they are awaiting anytime soon to upgrade it???? The odd thing it also states in brackets, contact a provider for super fast broadband!!!

On the sam Knows website i checked and got this which I assume i need>
FTTC status: Available in some areas

      And aslo the following information

The following services are available in your location:
      • BT Wholesale ADSL
      • BT Wholesale ADSL Max
      • BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
      • BT Wholesale SDSL
      • BT FTTC
      • AOL LLU
      • O2 / Be LLU
      • Bulldog LLU
      • TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
      • Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
      • Virgin Media (Cable)
Also not sure if this link here will help others?
      http://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/home...ing_orders.pdf

Also after doing a check i found out i am actually only 492 metres away and NOT 1000m in my original post - sorry

"You are approximately 492 metres from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!"

      Re: Sky Fibre hopeful

The 'AO' or 'Accepting Orders' describes the status of the Exchange. The best thing at the moment would be to confirm that you home can be connected to FTTC. To do this you will need to visit an on-line checker such as the BT Infinity checker:

BT Infinity – super fast broadband with a fibre optic internet connection

Since you are currently with Virgin, you will need to use your home address & Postcode.

The Green Street Boxes that we are referring to are where BTO stores all the necessary junctions for the telephone lines. A newer type houses the switching gear for FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet).

      Re: Sky Fibre hopeful

      Time for an update.

I have been checking the bbcheck.co.cc site daily, and today we have the following:-

      Phone number checked: xxxxx
      Postcode checked: xxxxx

      Data found:

      Exchange: Aberkenfig

Recorded Line Length (from exchange): 1561m
      Estimated Attenuation (on ADSL): 22dB

You are connected to Cabinet 8 which is currently live and accepting orders for FTTC

Your speed estimate for fibre is:
      Downstream: 40Mbps
      Upstream: 8Mbps
