the following is an email i today received from sky

      ------------------------------

      Dear Mr andrewjr

Welcome to Sky Broadband Unlimited Fibre. Your service will go active on Friday 17 February 2012.

      What will happen next?
An engineer will visit to install your Openreach modem ready for Sky Broadband. Your installation date has been arranged. Please check the details below and make sure an adult is home on the date of your appointment to let the engineer in.

In order for the engineer to carry out the required work, please check the property is ready for the installation (e.g. you have no unfinished building work). You will also need to notify us beforehand of any parking restrictions that may apply.

Once this has been installed, you'll need a Sky router which we will be sending out soon, including an install CD and set up guide. We'll be in touch when it's on its way. Once you've set up your Sky router your broadband services should be working immediately.

Appointment Date: Friday 17 February 2012
Appointment time: Between 13:00 and 18:00

Please note: If you can't make this appointment time and date, please contact us as soon as possible on 08442 *** ***. To rearrange your installation date you must contact us before 3.30pm on the working day before the appointment.

Otherwise we will retain the fee you may have paid us for your first appointment and will charge you up to 105 to arrange a second visit. This is also the case if the engineer can't install your line because you miss the appointment or if you fail to make the necessary arrangements for your visit.

      Keeping track of your order

We'll be in touch again soon, but you can always track your order at Sign in to My Sky – all you need is your username and the password you'll be asked to create when you log on for the first time. Should you ever forget your password then follow the 'forgotten your username or password?' link at the bottom of the My Sky login screen.

      Thanks again for choosing Sky.

      The Sky Team.

Since it is the BT Openreach Modem, let's hope that the overheating problems have been resolved!

      Re: Sky Fibre connection

Actually there is one massive benefit to Sky using this Modem, it may be possible to use a non-Sky router.

It is also possible the firmware* to enable for fibre it will open up more settings.

      * For the 2504N that is.

      Re: Sky Fibre connection

Unlikely that you'll be able to take it without Sky Talk. New Broadband customers now need to take line rental as well, they no longer sell them separately. Chances are, though I cannot confirm, that you'll need to take line rental even if you're an existing broadband customer upgrading to fibre.

      Re: Sky Fibre connection

still awaiting the router from sky. but as a side note, i just check BT Inifinty's service checker out of curiosity and it is now showing that I can receive the full 40mb/10mb service whereas it used to be 37mb/9mb.

so am looking forward to the 17th to see what it will be when everything from sky is installed

BT are providing new modems that don't overheat now.
