Where are we - fibre optic yet?

So, where are we? Does sky have any fibre optic plans yet? its been 2 years now since BT Infinity has really been rolled out nationally. Where are sky?

I am thinking about moving to BT Infinity (I never thought I would say that!) because of the speeds. My line speed keeps dropping and has been for the past 7 months and sky said they cant do anything, which is a first.... as its been stable for 5 years solid

Re: Where are we - fibre optic yet?

There is a strong possibility that Sky will launch in the next few months. March has been mentioned.

Sky's systems have been updated to include a section for Fibre, but most appear to be unable to access it.

Sky have upgraded their backhaul to 100Gbit lines. This should allow them to soak up the extra bandwidth through their network to cope with the forth coming increases caused by Fibre.

There is a 'trial' going on at present. A fresh trial for the public start earlier this month, but I suspect that this is more to do with confirming a few last minute tweaks and confirming that all the bugs have been ironed out.

It does appear that not all the relevant departments in Sky are aware of this though.

What isn't known is the actual price structure, any bandwidth limits, contract terms, T&Cs and the most important piece of information of all: Launch date.

Most of this information has been gleaned from this thread: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-n...broadband.html

Last I heard, small amounts of customers wanting to cancel were being offered to trial FTTC. Note: Only applied if you got through to one of the few turnaround advisors trained for fibre, have a speed under 2mbps and rack up a high usage.

Disclaimer: Some, or all, of the above may be incorrect and is simply a 'rumour' that I've 'heard'.

ummm - That's the third time this has been made known to us, by 3 different Sky people.

It must be pretty much true then, so I guess there is no point in us with-holding that information in future.

So whats thte presumption at the moment then
that sky will use bt's vdsl2 dslam's and run the backhaul from the exchange

or they will run a fresh FTTP line

if its the first the traffic will be mixed in with bt's back to the exchange

At this stage I am guessing that Sky will use BTO's infrastructure between the customer's home and the exchange, then either connect to their LLU equipment or BTO's, depending whether or not Sky has their equipment in the exchange.

What happens in the future is open to debate.
