Sky Anytime Plus and my Home Network

      Hello

A Sky Engineer is coming to install Sky Anytime Plus on Monday and I am worried about my home network set up.

My current set up is as follows:

Broadband comes in upstairs - but I don't think this is the master socket
Wired connection from router to PC and Xbox 360

I want the Sky Anytime Plus to go downstairs so I am assuming that the Sky Engineer will move the router downstairs and run a cable to the Sky HD box there.

What then happens to the connections I need upstairs? Ideally I would like them to be wired connections so are homeplugs my answer?

If so, will the Sky Engineer help me with this or am I being wildly optimistic???

If they won't help me then are homeplugs really just plug and play?? I struggle to believe this!!!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

      Cheers

      Mike

      Don't worry.

Ideally you should always plug your router in to the Master Socket as this will provide you with the best connection speed in your home.

Since you have extensions, you may actually benefit from fitting a filtered faceplate, but for the present I won't go through the process to confirm this. Instead I'll talk about the options available to connect your Sky STB to your router.

The Sky engineer can install a WiFi bridge which will physically connect to your Sky STB. The WiFi bridge will then be set up to connect to your Sky router.

If your master socket is downstairs, then the better option for a faster connection, would be to move your router. From there a pair of HomePlugs can be used, and yes most are literally simple to use.

Typically the one beside your router will have a short Ethernet cable, plug the adaptor into the mains socket (not on a surge protected extension) and the other adaptor plugs into a socket near to your PC.

If you have more than one PC, then you may wish to look into a 2nd HomePlug with more than one Ethernet port or purchase a LAN Switch to go with the pair.

Some HomePlugs needs to to be synchronised for security. This process will be explained in the instructions that come with them if it is required. It is normally a case of pressing a button or two on each unit. Once completed, that is it.

Your Sky STB is also known as your Sky+ HD Set Top Box.

Nothing to be sorry for. If the question hadn't been worth asking, you would not have asked it and I wouldn't of answered.

Re: Sky Anytime Plus and my Home Network

OK - so the Sky Engineer has been and Sky Anytime + is up and running!!

He stayed with me while I attempted to get the homeplugs to work. I plugged one into the router and then plugged the other in upstairs and then connected the PC and the Xbox.

Within seconds they were all working! I never thought that it would be that easy! It continued to work really well until I went to bed.......

I woke up this morning and couldn't connect to the internet because of a "DNS Server look up error". Does anyone know what is happening here?

I re-booted everything and it started working again but now I am worried that I will have to keep re-booting to make sure that it all works.

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

      "DNS Server look up error"
Where did you see this, on your PC or the STB?

As everything is working now, I would suggest that you should monitor the situation and see how things progress.

Ensure that the only things that get completely switched off are your Xbox & computers. It should be fine to leave the HomePlugs connected and the router switched on.
