Any chance of BBC iPlayer on Sky+HD?

Now we have Sky Anytime+ up and running (which is a great service), is there any chance BBC iPlayer could be made available?

It's on pretty much everything these days: Virgin, Freesat, PS3, Wii, iPhone, Internet TVs so why not Sky+HD? Just doesn't make sense considering how many people subscribe to Sky now.

With the ethernet port, it would be very simple to add BBC iPlayer and possibly ITV Player and 4OD to Sky Anytime+.

      Perhaps in the future.

There are a few things in the pipeline, but Sky keeps these things quiet.

Ahem, not everybody has Anytime+ yet.

Amstrad 780 owners are being given the mushroom treatment and Thomson owners are getting replacement boxes.

trouble is that as Anytime+ is only avaliable to SKY BB customers I can't see Sky offering iPlayer unless they open up to all ISP's otherwise the BBC could be accused of aiding Sky in getting more BB customers.

That is something the BBC would not want to enter into.

I think the difference there is that BT are not a 'content creator' so there is no conflict of interest.

Isn't BBC iPlayer available with Virgin BB too?

Whilst they sold off their TV presenting arm last year to Sky, I suspect that BBC iPlayer would have been available before then.

I don't see why you'd need Sky Broadband for BBC iPlayer. They could update the software so that when you go into 'Anytime' you get the option of BBC iPlayer or Sky Anytime, if you select BBC iPlayer, you connect to BBC's service and not Sky's Anytime.

Re: Any chance of BBC iPlayer on Sky+HD?

Which in turn then gets people asking why isn't Anytime plus avaliable to them as well.

Sky have been fairly evasive as why they won't allow A+ on other ISP's and allowing iPlayer on other ISP's would only fan the flames even more.

I suspect that the real reason is money, Sky doesn't see that making an iPlayer interface benefits them as it is avaliable in so many other flavours as opposed to making their own VOD system and holding as a marketing tool to sell more broadband.

It is down to Sky to negotiate with the BBC and introduce an application that is capable of meeting the BBC's requirements on the Sky STBs.

They may well have been holding back for Anytime+ to be rolled out for everyone first and members of this forum will vouch for the many issues that this has had.

I can't recall the site just now, but earlier this year Sky signed up to a consortium who are designing an application which will combine the players from BBC, ITV, Ch4 & Ch5. I would expect them to consider adding this app to the Sky+ HD & SkyHD STBs next year when it is planned to be launched.

As for only allowing BBC iPlayer apps on their own BB - eh? I'd agree that this is bogus.

BBC iPlayer is now built in to many devices, available to be installed on PCs (not sure about Macs) and even some mobiles. Foxsat has it on their Freesat STBs. Many TVs have it available. No one check who your BB supplier is.
