Sky sent me a letter offering a free replacement hd box (currently have a thompson)

      Hi
Just thought I would let you guys know, Sky sent me a letter today offering to replace my Thompson with a new box (no mentions on letter of it being a refurb) for free since my Thompson cant get anytime+. They say its so I enjoy anytime+ sooner but I think its really since the Thompsons cant handle it based on what you guys have said here.
      Also if I like I can get a 1TB for 149 (100 off).
All I have done is the register interest/get it now link on the sky site a while ago so I guess they used that.

Just thought I would post the heads up.

NOTE: You must be on Sky Unlimited as it mentions this in the letter (the fact I am an HD sub and on Sky Unlimited) as to why I am being offered the deal.

This is good news for everyone.

Recently members have been posting about being able to get a replacement Amstrad DRX 980 STB for around 30 when they complained.

It's up to you whether to go for the 1Tb model or to fit a larger drive yourself.

If you wish to record a lot of HD content, then you can very quickly eat into the standard capacity very quickly.

Interesting, especially if you can keep the old Thomson box and swap over an existing 1 TB HDD that contains a lot of recorded material. I wonder if you can keep the old box and simply swap the drive or will you still need to Copy+ for the swap to work?

It is unlikely that Copy+ will work as the new STB will have Darwin already installed.

'Replace' rather suggests that the boxes will be swapped, the same as any time a box is changed. It will not suit many who do not have HDMI inputs on their TV.

I think it is one up for Sky though who are prepared to write of quite a lot of money to keep their customers happy.

I am thinking about getting the 1TB but am concerned by the firmware issues I have heard about. If/When I will be asking for no install as I have done it myself a fair few times and an engineer is a waste of time/money.
Tbh my thompson has not been a bad box, I know friends with the samsung who have tons of issues, the only issue I really have is the odd time where I have to reboot the box as it has no signal when I turn it on in the morning but its not a huge issue. Freezing etc would be a big annoyance.

I think its nice that Sky are at least trying to keep customers happy, so many companies (sky included) focus far to much on new customers and not retention of old ones.

Seen this on twitter as well from SkyHD when replying to someone asking about there thomson box getting Anytime+ (they never replied to me!)

You will be contacted by email or letter regarding the replacement of your box. Unfortunately your Thomson box is incompatible. SW

Agreed. I also guess most (maybe all) will select the 1 TB box so Sky will recover some of the cost - a 1 TB HDD is a lot less than 149!

If I'm offered the option I might well accept provided it's a NEW box.

Re: Sky sent me a letter offering a free replacement hd box (currently have a thompso

I've been running the 'trial' firmware (26.70) for some time now and it seems a lot more stable than the previous version.

I installed a 2TB drive shortly before the update as I was also getting a HD TV and wanted the larger storage capacity. It occasionally hung with the new drive on 26.59, but I can't say that I've noticed this on the latest version.

Hopefully Sky will roll out a final version with other known bug fixes soon.
