Oh well, many thanks for your (and everyone else's) efforts.

I'm loath to call Sky because they'll just cap the line.

Are you absolutly sure there is no noise on the phone line when you use a normal wired phone at the test socket? I only ask because if there is you could report this as a voice fault to BT. Your BB fault could be connected to this.

I don't understand this - perhaps Brian69 can explain? If the extensions don't work with the faceplate off and there is nothing wired to the faceplate (see post #26 above), how on earth are the extensions connected to the line - or am I missing something silly?

I'm sorry. It's probably my terminology!! The face plate has nothing hard-wired to it, however both extensions 'plug' into it.

Hmmm, not 100% sure. I'll check again tomorrow.

*** Thanks very much to both of you for your help!! ***

      Hi Eyemdee.
I know what you mean, on the face of it, it made no sense. I once spent a good hour on another forum trying to get the OP to identifiy the master socket, and failed. Later they came back on line to say they had found the socket with the components in it but were not sure if that is what I was after!.
Now I try to stick to fixed points to get the information I need to help. It can seem a little cold and script like, but it does ensure we all sing from the same song sheet.

^^^ Yes, I know what you mean. I would never have believed that these sockets could have been installed to plug in to this one when the faceplate surely has the facility to hard wire them both!

That's why I give you tech guys pictures. I assume it makes it a lot easier to understand me floundering without you.

      Re: What's happened?

Well there you go. The master socket with line wired to faceplate is more common than you might think, and leads to endless confusion with teir1 style helplines, who think that as it was fitted by Openreach/BT it must be the caller who is wrong, and the caller ends up with no faith in the help line. Just for the record.
      (1) With the faceplate removed, the test socket should be the only socket working.
      (2) when using a filter faceplate, all voice extensions must be wired from it's filtered terminals. If they are run from the phone socket on the filter, they will be.

A picture's worth a thousand words! You would be suprised what you can spot in some installations with a good photo.
