I have been round the house and disconnected wire 3 which was connected to most phone sockets. There is one phone socket which I can't get to very easily. First question: Should I make the effort to get to this final socket?

I was getting 5000-6000 achieved download speeds on Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test yesterday afternoon, but now I am in the range of 100-500. My upload speed is quite healthy at about 550-650. Second question: Why?

      All help appreciated
      Andrew

PS Great site. Very informative. Used the info on here to extract username and password and used my old router. Same sluggishness though...

      By way of update-

Re: Very low download speeds - help!

Your errors are very, very bad - even with a noise margin of 10+db. First thing you need to do is find out what's causing this.

Second, although a very high error level will reduce download speed, there are often other reasons:
      • you're using wireless
      • your TCP/IP settings are incorrect
      • you are using a slow/overloaded speedtest server

Hi ajb, firstly before trying to get to that elusive socket can you post stats with the router connected to the test socket. This is hidden behind the front of your master socket, assuming you have one. Not being well up on stats I will leave this for others to comment on ( there you go - top man heed his advice ) but they do seem high for the short period shown. Getting stats from the test socket will eliminate any internal wiring faults and if, when you get them, they are okay it will show whether it would be beneficial to attack this last socket. I suspect that it will be

      Now getting this:

Would it be more sensible for me to stick at this sort of speed rather than going for a flat out connection with a load of errors?

Re: Very low download speeds - help!

Sounds like a good plan ! Make sure that you connect the router directly into the test socket, not the master and you connect the laptop via ethernet cable - then try and work it hard for an hour or two.
      good luck

      Hi guys

Used the master socket and a wired connection from modem to PC. Downloaded a huge file and averaged 737kbps. Here's my stats:
