      Very Poor speeds (Detailed stats)

      Hi all,

I posted yesterday in the broadband help section. Getting very poor sync speed of less than 1 MB. Wonder if you could take a look at this and tell me if I have a line problem. Sky tech tell me this should sort itself out within 3 days of activation but I'm not so sure. I am 3km away from the exchange.

      Here are my stas :

      Hi Matt,
Your attenuation is high and your your noise level is high too, so it does not amaze me that you are getting a slow connection. I am further away from my exchange and I get an attenuation of 59db, which is lower than yours, and I get a noise SNR ratio of 17db, which is a lot less noise than your 7.7db. Noise seems to be your main problem here...

      Thanks for your reply

These stats where produced with the router plugged into the test socket so I have eliminated all internal possibilities. Do you think it would be best to call BT and report a voice fault or would sky tech tier 3 be able to help.

Re: Very Poor speeds (Detailed stats)

Your attenuation at 63.5db is near the limit for a stable ADSL connection and you may find it very difficult to get near the maximum for that attenuation of ~2250kbps.

Your line is generating a quite a lot ot of errors, particularly loss of signal) and this is likely to be a combination of the effects of a high attenuation and of noise - hopefully being generated within your house as this is more easily remedied.

Please run a test by connecting your router directly to the test socket (which is hidden inside your master socket, assuming you have an NTE5) with the supplied router cable. Reboot the router then use the connection heavily for at least an hour. Then take a new set of stats.

PS there's nothing wrong with a noise margin of 7.7db.

EDIT: Just seen your reply that the stats were already with the test socket. Is that with a direct connection?
BT will only respond to a voice fault that they can detect. T3 can't do anything to improve your connection other than cap you. Unless BT find a fault, I think you might just have to accept that's the speed you are going to get.

No - you're slightly off track there. See reply to another of your posts:

Re: Very Poor speeds (Detailed stats)

      Thanks for your reply Saturday,

I am awaiting a reply from tier 3 (rasied a call with tier 1 who escalated) Also logged a pretend voice fault with BT to see if there was a fault on the line. So now I just play the waiting game!!!

thanks everyone for all your help on this, I must say the prospect of having this connection is going to be a real problem for me especially when i'm used to my old 4meg cable conection!!!!!

      thanks again,

      Matt

Re: Very Poor speeds (Detailed stats)

Well Sky tech support e-mailed me said there was not much that they could do, Tier 3 will be calling me back on Monday probably with bad news. Might have to get Virgin cable as well as sky.

Re: Very Poor speeds (Detailed stats)

Well T3 tried to call me back today but I was out, spoke to Tier 1 who advised that a note on my account says that my line has a fault which needs to be raised with BT, so at least they found a problem.

Has anybody had anything simmilar to this before where by you have had high levels of noise on the actual line external to the master socket, and if so did you have any success with whatever work was carried out. I accept the high attenuation but i have seen people on this forum with higher attenuation and better sync speeds.

      thanks again,

      Matt

Re: Very Poor speeds (Detailed stats)

I did get in contact with Tier 3 and they tried capping me at 1MB but then the router wouldn't sync. BT say there is no voice fault so I guess that's me stuck, Sky won't let me downgrade to the base package, can they do this ?

Does anybody have experience with alliminium telephone lines I have been told that my area which was built at the end of the eighties, was layed with alliminum and not copper. This could be a contributing factor in why there is so much noise on my line, and why my connection is so poor

      thanks for your help

      Matt
