chains are the best tbh [snow socks are a pain to take on/off and wear out quick when u get snow/icy roads then tarmac /gritted icy roads] or get winter tyres [which may become neccesary if we keep getting this weather pattern] and always drive in a higher gear [on ice 2nd gear minimum, snow is the same, as the 1st gear is too torquey and will spin yah ]also a shovel ,some rock salt and a decent sleeping bag in the boot along with a flask and some food is a good idea [last week took me 7 hours to go 5 miles [ended up ditching van and walked home ]and that was in glasgow lol [mate was stuck on m8 at hart hill for 19 hours :(
Remember to that chains do no good when the idiot in front of you is thrashing it in 1st gear and slithering all over the place.:(
Thanks for the advice guys, if we keep getting winters like this then i would like to think that the government will make it law for snow tyres/chains to be used in winter months like other euroland country's do.
This is the weather for front wheel drive, on Saturday all the cars having problems were the BMW and Merc's with rear wheel drive
Is it only me who remembers snow chains being regularly used on tyres when I was a nipper?

I heard on the radio the other day that some insurance companies regard snow socks as 'unauthorised modifications' and will not provide cover if these are fitted. I also hear that some don't allow snow tyres either ! Complete lunacy !
