Virgins New 100mbit/s Service
Virgin has a new 100mbits service which is a good start to improving speeds in the Uk. Although the problem in the UK is offering a consistent speed to all users, how far do you think this helps move things on?
Personally I thinking that Virgin has never helped move things on in terms of speed, they have always claimed to have high speeds because of the fibre network and have charge higher prices then ADSL, which is fair for the supior product, but have actaully created a gap in the speeds that people get. BT have had to invest in less profitable areas of the market and take a loss to provide phone/interenet services, although i do think thier comments that virgin are charging too much seem a little strange. I am waiting for the day when BT finish out the rollout and see where virgin are at then

Re: Virgins New 100mbit/s Service
Well as only a small % of Virgin customers took up the 50mb product i doubt very much that the 100mb service will be a great success or anything for other ISP's to worry about.
Re: Virgins New 100mbit/s Service
I was reading that at launch only 4 towns in the Uk are going to be able to receive it, is that right.
Re: Virgins New 100mbit/s Service
Yup the service will be rolled out slowly taking until 2012.
The 50 meg service has now 90,000 customers, so I reckon Virgin is hoping to get some of these people to upgrade and get the extra £7 per month.
Given that traffic shaping is still mentioned on this product with such a small user base you would have thought it would have been suspended until they get some customers.
Re: Virgins New 100mbit/s Service
even if it was 200mb it would come with a price tag also virgin isnt in my area so its pointless for me
Re: Virgins New 100mbit/s Service
If they extended their service to areas that don't have any cable service, that would be useful. The problem is that it would cost a lot. Increasing the speed from 50 to 100 mb probably costs very little, but keeps them ahead in the speed race.
Re: Virgins New 100mbit/s Service
erm what's the point if those freebie music downloaders will start getting punished next year?? i thought that was the whole point of unlimited...and fast...and the downloaders have the right to get what they want...it isn't even stealing..just taking stuff that was distributed...the uploaders sould have the net cut off...i'm sad that limewire was shut down!!!

yeah but how many people've been caught? can you answer that?
Re: Virgins New 100mbit/s Service
You don't get caught for uploading and downloading legally, only when you abuse copyright material. Thousands have been caught, only one has been taken to court to my knowledge. She was fined £16,000, don't know if she ever paid it. Many have been frightened into paying out hundreds of pounds in compensation.:)
This is getting off topic, so I suggest we stop this line of posting now.;)
