Saying hello as requested!
Hi Folks
I've just called sky to join (local exchange recently became unbundled) and kicked off the process.
I decided to have a read through this forum (found in a google search) to get a feel for what the service is like and got a surprise already.
It seems from various threads I've read that Sky insist on you using the router they provide, however I mentioned to the agent when I was signing up that I intended to use my own as it supported VOIP and he said that was fine but to be aware I would not receive tech support on non-Sky supplied routers, which seems fine to me.
So have I been misled and am I going to struggle to get a username/password out of one of the new Sky routers (if thats what is sent)?
As I've only just placed the order I haven't received the full T&C's yet so can't confirm what the official line is from Sky. Even looking on-line lots of mention is made of their 'Free' router but nothing was said that I could find that says it's use is mandatory.
Oh - and of course hello to everyone and thanks for reading!:)
Re: Saying hello as requested!
As far as I am aware the Sky T&Cs still state that you must use the supplied Sky router. They have also gone to great lengths to "hide" the username and password from the user.
Thankfully we have some very technically competent members and workarounds for this have been found, which you'll find details of elsewhere in the forum.
Please note though that using your own router will be breaking the terms you have agreed to and you will potentially run the risk of losing your BB service if Sky choose to enforce the terms.

Not so far - as mentioned the terms stated by the agent on the phone were simply that it was fine but unsupported....although I realise if those terms are contradicted in the written T&C's then i can make that choice when I see them...
I can understand them only offering support for their own equipment, it seems odd however that they should have a condition that precludes the use of other equipment.
Out of interest - I completely forgot to ask while on the phone, do Sky provide static or dynamic IP's? And I don't suppose they do anything fancy like offer IP blocks on request?

I think as already stated you will find the written t&c's will contradict what youve been told verbally.

No & No & No
Re: Saying hello as requested!
They must do one of the first two surely ;)
Which is it though, a static IP or a dynamic IP?
Re: Saying hello as requested!
Sorry - silly me they are dynamic :o
